If you have sharp eyes you will see there is a date stamp on each wheel. My 71 Westy was manufactured in Oct 1970 and each wheel has a date stamp of 8 over 70 (IE August wheel production) I have obtained a second spare with date stamp of 3 over 71. Wheels were produced for the 71 model...
The road wheel type you show will fit ok but it is not a true 71 wheel. 71 was unique in that it has a round centre hole and I believe was the only year. Depends if you want to be original. I gave a couple of these wheels away recently. Too far away to be of help I am afraid. This is...
I am over here in British Columbia where there is a dearth of aircooled resources so unlikely to impact you guys in the UK. California is my best resource however distance is the issue. Shipping into Canada has become prohibitive. We will find a solution. Just a matter of perseverance...
We did not part on good terms. I was unhappy with the overall work he was doing for me and told him so. He did not take it constructively. Quite the challenge these days to find an "expert" who you can work with and trust and who gives value for money. Boy, I must be getting old and...
Had the trans on my 71 Westy rebuilt and since reinstalling from the get go it jumps out of 2nd. If I double declutch and hold the gear shift 2nd gear works ok. Any ideas on a straightforward fix or will the trans have to come out again and be disassembled? All other gears operate ok...
Looking for one rear seat belt (white knob version) in good operational condition.
Part numbers believed to be 231 857 749 and 231 857 707.
Many thanks

I went with an upgrade on my existing 1600 dual port motor to a 1776cc. Fairly simple upgrade and gives me adequate power. Perhaps 85bhp. Added a drop sump which increase capacity to 4 liters coupled with an external oil filter. Added larger fan but am going back to the original...
I am building a buddy seat pretty much from scratch and trying to figure out the seat dimensions. SEE PIC BELOW: I have the one side piece as a starting point but need to know the width and depth of the seat in order to add the full framework. IE how far out from the bulkhead does the seat...
Great area. We used to live outside Cutthorpe before returning to Canada and thoroughly enjoyed the hikes and pubs in that area. Will return one day.
Very best to you.
I agree with Mike. Check the starter solenoid.
The other situation of not starting when hot could be the Distributor. Check the cap to see if it has any hairline cracks which expand when hot and a restart may not be possible until cooled off and any crack shrinks back.
"mid engined" 71 Unfortunately was not ready for the 24th Treffen 10 day drive from the Canadian Border down to the Mexican Border which just completed. Always next year !! Great route down the Pacific Hwy 101.
Memories. Had the identical van back in the late 1970's. Green with white roof and she took us reliably all around British Columbia. I even think I still have the driver manual somewhere in the bookcase. Recently bought a 1971 project with a plan to repeat some of those experiences from...
Interested to know if your 71 has the vacuum assisted brake servo. I am adding Weber IDF 40's to my 71 and need to adapt the inlet manifolds to accept a vacuum line. The 71 was apparently the first year to have the front disc brakes and mine are servo assisted.
Cheers
