Cheers Oz. I am having the engine dropped this coming week and having a good look around the fan housing, as suggested. I have had good feel around already and all seems well back there, ie there is no play, the fan and alternator rotate smoothly, no obvious causes of tension of blockage. But...

Have carried a spare both inside and on the roof, but now carry a repair/inflation kit that otherwise lives in my daily driver. It may not get me home but it ought to get me off a motorway and to the nearest tyre shop. Have never considered front mounting for all the reasons already stated...

Another vote for Iain at VWaircooledautoelec. Did a brilliant job on my new loom on Friday in bitterly cold conditions, and cheerfully put right a few surprises along the way at no additional cost. Great bloke, does a proper job and is highly recommended. :D Kev
