All the above and also always replace the oil cooler seals regardless and if the push rods seals are leaking change those out too. check and see if you have a single carb, which is fine, see if the heat risers are clear so the intake will heat up properly so it won't ice up. Like the guy above...

looks like you need a bigger breaker bar or a 3/4 inch ratchet with a really long handle and lots of heat the yellow bottle not the blue one. i had a really stubborn one on a parts bus i had and that's what it took.

you can still run a stock carb with a 1776 it just has to be jetted a little more i can't remember what size it was. i loved that motor in one of the first buses i owned. 1776 dual port with a jetted out 34pict. ran like a champ set it and forget it. nobody says you have to dual carb everything.
