And wish you hadn't :? Just started with touching a few little bits up, then got the sander out for a small section, then started enjoying myself, then.......

I haven't got a clue what to do next...

The paint was totally shot and flaking off to be fair..

oops,we've al done it - Its always the waythat its worse than it looks.Ok,quick fire procedure for an OK job depending on patience ;) ....you need to get rid of a much rust as poss, then use some 'kurust' or the like rust treatment on the rusty bits.follow that with primer,or if your flush, etch primer or zinc primer,(if the rust has created pits in the metal, you may have to fill them in with fine body filler, light coat by light coat sanding in between coats) rub down lightly each coat & re coat as many times as is needed to get a smoooooth as a babies bum finish with no bare spots.slightly overlap into the good surrounding paint.apply the top coat,a light coat at a time until evenly built up,once again, slightly overlapping into the good paint.several light coats are better than a few thick ones! let that go off for a week or so then use a cutting polish such as Autoglym paint restorer (avoid t cut - a bit agressive i.m.o.) to bring the shine up to match the surrounding paint and blend it in. you can get all you need from a motor shop such as Halfords, however shop around and you WILL find cheaper than Halfords.

that OK?

failing that - book it into a body shop for a pro job.

Hi Doris,
That sounds spot on thank you! As it happens none of the rust has gone through or pitted the metal at all so that's good news, I'm assuming?! :D It looks lime someone has done a few, bodge jobs around the van, nothing major, most of it's original paint, just that part had started to bobble to the point it was flaking and looked crap. Needed doing and I was in the mood ;)
I'm not after a show & shine finish at all. Just wanted to Stop the surface rust before it got any worse..
What grades sandpaper do folk use and at what points? I've a good idea at starting with P80 before applying the primer to P800 between coats. Is that right?

hmm,wet & dry paper. I reckon 80 would be far too course.I used 80 to bare metal the bus through 4 coats of paint.maybe 400 grit to start with, gradually getting finer to about 1000,1200 for the final rub?
anyone else suggest grades of paper?

I've not looked but I bet there is a load of How 2 video's on you tube....

p.s. on the flat sections, wrap the paper round a block to stop your fingers putting uneven pressure on the body.

Looks like Clem might be getting a phone call....

Roger, I've got a few packets of assorted wet & dry (have no doubt ill need more but good for the time being) A couple of sanding blocks and a tub of kurust hammerite. Do you think I'd be better just sanding the majority, if not all of the arch to bare metal? I like my sanding now haha  I think this spraying lark might be a second career for me, I quite enjoy doing it actually. The fact that I'm a bit of a perfectionist might start to annoy me when it comes to finishing though!!! 8)

I posted on another thread the other day this good tip : when using wet-and-dry, when you get to the rubbing down between coats, use soap and water on the paper, it stops it clogging. I just use a bucket of water, and have an ordinary bar of soap that I rub on the paper before applying to the metal ;)

I have just done the exact same thing. "I'll just rub down that little paint blister" now the whole van is in bits & half in primer

That whole area had been blown in in the past, you could see the fade lines in the paint, and I guess had been bare metalled before, unless you did a lot of rubbing back?
You'll need to get some aerosols mixed to blow back in yourself. This could be the tip of an iceberg?

At least the weathers warmer for it!

I'm actually really chuffed with how it's going on! Thanks to all your replies and advice, I've been following quite a few respraying threads (creationblue's DIY painting thread) on here recently & having never really done it before found then very informative  Just gotta flat back my primer tomorrow then the fun begins with the colour. I'm really enjoying it! :D

Hi Andy,
Your right I failed miserably there didn't I?! Under the White primer you see are two coats of zinc primer each flattened back with P800 wet & dry, water and soap :) perhaps a little over board but it's working for me
I shall ensure the next stages are well documented :D Trust me, if I can do it anyone can!!!

Work in progress!!

After three coats of colour.. Obviously there's some serious fade going off over the 40+ years it's spent in LA but I've tried my best to fade it as best as possible.. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's tidy & better than it was.. Few more coats and some p1200 action and I'll be happy. Give it a week Then I'll start the cutting in with a little G3. :D
