Had a week of glorious sunshine in the Suffolk wilderness this week. Was a tough call on weather to use the bus or carry on in the Bavarian hair salon šŸ¤” the bus won šŸ˜‚

Had a busy couple days doing various jobs in my friend Darrenā€™s 1970 westy (formally Slammed restoā€™s) getting it ready for the show season.



Also had this in for a few weeks sorting many issues and terrible/dangerous workmanship, courtesy of the local air cooled ā€˜specialistsā€™ vw antics šŸ˜”
 
Steve took us this cool bar where you can order a yard of beer. The rules are you give a shoe and only get it back if you finish it!



Quite a distinct look of worry on my face here šŸ˜‚ luckily I persevered and didnā€™t end up with a wet foot on the way back to the hotel
That's funny! I read the text below the photo first and thought you felt lucky because you didn't piss yourself!
 


December 2007: on U.K. roads, freshly imported from San Fransisco with an asthmatic smog 1600, stock suspension, a slipping clutch, horrendous brakes and the usual shocking body repairs to be expected on US imports.

16 yrs of evolutionā€¦ā€¦



March 2023: at the Freddies files in Belgium. Now fully restored, 2276 street/strip motor with built 091 box, Porsche brakes along with a 4.5ā€ king & link pin beam, dropped spindles and adjustable spring plates.

Itā€™s been a lot of work, money and at times stress but I absolutely love my bus šŸ„°šŸ˜Ž
OMG that's beautiful! I've got a '71 white westy - I love her but I've got a long way to go...

What's involved with running nitro?


This is probably the best photo with the majority of the fuel system in it. The 2 fuel pumps & filters are mounted underneath.

Whatā€™s involved in running nitrous: A LOT! how it works is pretty simple but getting to work properly and safely is another matter all to together.

You need to be able to retard the timing when spraying as well as an ignition system with an RPM window is recommended, along with fuel pressure safety switch will be a wise addition. A wet system is what you need when running carbs so a secondary high pressure supplementary fuel system is required. An engine built specifically for running nitrous, Forged pistons like wiescos or JEā€™s are preferred to withstand the high cylinder pressures nitrous creates. Putting a healthy shot of gas through a generic 1776 etc will blow it to pieces, uprated engine & box mounts and a built gearbox with at the very least a super diff is also a must.

Itā€™s not cheap or a quick job to do properly.
 
So, Iā€™m tired with breaking nose cone mounts and/or wheel hop. All the repro mounts available are complete shit and there is no uprated option for a baywindow šŸ™„ Therefore I rang Pete Englezos and asked his opinion on the matterā€¦. He said ā€œsimple, fully solid mount itā€ I was dubious due to the possibility of increased noise and vibration but Pete assured me it wouldnā€™t be that bad as I donā€™t have a roll cage and a the interior will absorb a lot of it.

Nose cone mount done, just need to do the engine bar now as the mid mount is already solid.

250 fault less miles, 1 tank of fuel and didnā€™t get too hot. Once again the apparent non bus friendly engine proving itself to be an awesome bus engine šŸ˜



Locked back away in my shop, might give it an oil change this week šŸ¤”
