Do I have to get it out to replace the backing plate? Its going to be easier to take the whole unit off the van?

I have a 71 bay and ive removed the brakes and intended to replace the backing plate as they are knackered. I cant get the backing plate off the dowel pin. I havnt tried too hard yet as id rather check how I should go about it. Do i drive the pin out or pull the backing plate off the dowel? I...
