Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

I've tried sucking on the dizzy vacuum pipe and it takes all my might to move the advance even after lubricating everything and manually opening/closing it to get it as loose as possible, so I either need to strip it all down or bite the bullet and get a new one. At least that's likely one issue...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Thanks all—I appreciate your time and thoughts! I have an SVDA fitted with electronic ignition, it was only a cheap one bought from eBay or MegaBug about 12 years ago, but it's barely done any miles at all. I've seen Accuspark ones on eBay for £70 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182163969108) so...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Great question—I don't know, today was the first time I've used a timing gun! I'll connect it all up and try, might not be able to get on it until Saturday though. What will that test tell me?

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

After another MOT fail on the T4 and loads of welding I'm finally back on the bus. First of I set the valve clearances again—they were all fine. Then I attempted to set the timing with my new timing gun... got it bang on for 7.5dbtdc on idle, however, I am getting ZERO advance whatsoever when...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Finally got the bus insured today and took it out for a quick 2-mile test drive—there was no stalling at junctions etc, no huge oil leak, but it's definitely lacking power and doesn't want to pull past 30mph or up any semblance of a hill. I think I need to re-check everything (tappets, timing...

Right you are @naskeet — thank you! My bolts are 14mm standard, ignore what I said above, I was obviously trying to do too many things at once. Test drive Saturday...

    sliding door handle help

@davidoft that would be great, if I can get a rough idea of the position of the grub screw underneath the collar I will try that!

    sliding door handle help

I am in a similar position, I bought a brand-new sliding door handle, which is locked, but don't have the key for it... What is my best option here—should I cut off the collar so I can replace the barrel (£??), and buy a new collar (Approx £30)? Or is this now a lost cause and would I be...

    Leaking front Windscreen seal.

After much deliberation before fitting my new screen and seal a few months back, I used Arbomast Autograde Sealant for windscreens, the cheapest place I found is here: https://www.dortechdirect.co.uk/arbomast-autograde-sealant-for-windscreens.html 1 tube is plenty.

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

I forgot to block the rear vacuum port on the carb which won't have helped things 🤦‍♂️ I have now re-assembled everything and got it running again and it does seem better, though there is a backfire if I rev it high and hard from idle. I have tried pulling off a number of times up a slight...

    Stepped cam set up

I'm overriding the choke here by holding the whole spindle assembly fully open as far as it will go—the 'pin' that runs in the curved slot in the stepped cam is hard up against the end so it can't open any further. Here is a better photo showing how the fast-idle screw catches the corner of the...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

After a short delay fixing the T4 I have now performed a compression test on the engine, and it's not good reading. All cylinders are showing within less than 5psi variance, but only at 25psi I tried a different connection on the tester and managed to get 50psi on cylinder #4 before running...

    Stepped cam set up

Trying to link my issue to a similar thread—when I hold the stepped cam fully open, the throttle screw doesn't correctly clear the final step of the cam—you can see here that it catches the edge of the previous (4th) step: Am I opening the cam too far (i.e. should it end on the 4th step) or is...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

@ozziedog you're bang on here, the trouble I've got is that I'm now getting so excited after waiting so long to drive this thing that I'm starting to rush and squeeze jobs in during my lunch breaks while it's still light. Hopefully, there is no internal damage...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Everything is reassembled and turning over nicely now: Video of engine turning over rockers showing (17seconds) I'll have to wait until tomorrow evening to attempt another start after I've double checked the timing.

Cheers @67panel —they both look ok, the heads are brand new so I would expect them to be!

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Right—just spent my lunch inspecting the engine. The #3 HT lead pulled out of the dizzy cap too easily so that was obviously loose. HT leads all in the correct order, I set about checking the valve clearances again. #1 and #2 were perfect, opened the left-hand side and saw the rocker assembly...

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Gents—thanks for all the advice. I did complete the initial 20-minute run-in at 2000rpm successfully a couple of months back with no concern, but I will check everything thoroughly now before running it again. Think it might be time to book some annual leave!
