    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

Hey guys just an update on this project. Sadly my Father passed away in September 2016 after a long battle with cancer, he taught me everything I know when it comes to vehicles (and having a positive attitude!) but found that I lost all enthusiasm to do this work, and it was difficult to even be...

    Oil pressure relief valves

Stupid question, it was stuck in the case! This is what happens to your brain when you take a year off :(

    Oil pressure relief valves

Hi guys I have finally been able to get back on my bus, I am rebuilding the engine and have removed the oil pressure relief valves: The top one with the valve is nearest the flywheel, but the other just has a longer spring and no valve. Is this correct or should they both be identical...

WANTED - Pair of twinport cylinder heads

Hey guys I need a pair of cylinder heads to complete my 1600 twinport rebuild and I just don't have the cash to buy new. Has anybody got a pair lying around? I can strip and clean them and lap in the valves so it doesn't matter if they are old or used, but obviously don't have the machinery or...

Roof parts & glass FREE to collector

Hey guys I have some bits that may be of use to somebody before I throw them, they're yours for nothing if you can pick them up from Redditch in the midlands: 2 x side windows taken out of my converted panel van, both have pitting from grinding. 1 x inner roof arch 1 x rear inner bootlid hinge...

    Container to add engine oil

I use one of those disposable sports bottles (e.g. Lucozade) that has a suction nozzle so I can hold it upside and the oil won't come out unless I squeeze the bottle. Very handy especially in it's small size, though this does mean several refills.

Removing starter motor on lowered bays

Yeah it's the correct D-bolt that I'm using. Is the gearbox mounted too high?

Days 23 - 25 May 14th - May 16th OK been slightly sidetracked by having to MOT both of my parents' cars, but I have managed to finish the roof! (Gutters upwards...). Target for MOT was end of May but along with the interruptions I have just removed the engine and will be sorting the wiring and...

Removing starter motor on lowered bays

It is not possible for me to remove the top starter motor bolt (the long one that double as the engine bolt) without levering the gearbox down to provide enough clearance for the bolt head, can anyone explain why this is? Is this crossmember above the gearbox original? Looking directly...

Days 19 - 22 March 30th - April 5th Lot's of half days here and there with interruptions, but I have managed to finish making the panels for the rear - including some compound curves which was an interesting first time exercise! I have got to the point now where I have nearly finished all the...

I was apprehensive at first but now I've done one side at the rear it's not so bad, just take your time and accept that it will take a while and it is quite enjoyable! Safe in the knowledge that your bus will be better than it ever has been under your ownership!

    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

Days 15-18 March 20-24th Right, after running out of welding gas (another £80 bites the dust) I have been working flat out again, I have finished welding in the side panels on both sides, and am now attacking the rear end. Eventually I want to replace the rear quarters wholesale but with money...

    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

Day 14 March 16th Today I made the decision to replace the rear side windows with metal, returning this part of the bus back into a panelvan at least. I had a long hard think about it and came up with the phro's and con's: Keep the windows: Better visibility Higher resale value Return to...

    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

I'm definitely fibreglassing the other areas - I'll deal with them another time!!! I think the key is to tackle small sections at a time; my old man is forever reminding me of the time he restored the front end of my uncles bay and he ended up ripping everything off leaving nothing left to line...

Day 12 March 14th Good progress today! Welded up about 20% of the spot welds on the roof, and welded the front edge to the existing front lip... First I trimmed the skin to fit in line with the front panel I left just a tiny gap all the way along to fill with weld This is where I made an...

    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

Day 11 March 12th A nice easy day today as my face is still on fire. I purchased Weathermate from toolstation to bond the roof back onto the crossmembers. I chose this because it bonds bitumen and steel - the two surfaces I had to join, and it acts as a gap filler. It does say on the tube "for...

Ah I've got to keep it haven't I! My plan is to get the bus through it's MOT as fast as possible, hopefully in May, so I can use it again as my daily drive. All the cosmetic stuff can wait, I just miss driving my bus!

    1971 - YRY483J -Restoration

Days 9 & 10 March 10th & 11th After a week or so off thanks to some cretin stamping on my ankle in a football match - and then my Dad insisting on building a fence - I managed to get back on the bus! Lots and lots of welding to get the frame properly secure, some had to be done without a mask...
