Home made brake lines - good idea ?

Tis a bit unreasonable, probably thought he could squeeze a few quid out of you! I go to the same garage for mot's for 20 years and the testers have somewhat different opinions at times but they are all aware i do all the work myself so theres no benefit to them in being overly harsh. However...

Home made brake lines - good idea ?

Lastly, i'm not knocking you but i expect to see in the dark and stop in a reasonable distance in any vehicle, especially my bus as I cherish it. The day you run a child over 'cos you couldn't see them in the dark or couldn't stop will change your mind and you'll have lots of time to think on...

Home made brake lines - good idea ?

oh, and cleanliness is a must with any hydraulics, use a pipe cutter and not a saw to avoid debris and dirt ingress. Bend the new pipes in a clean area as any contamination will cause problems for sure. If you have compressed air then blow the completed pipes through before fitting.

Home made brake lines - good idea ?

I made my own and have recently done a full beetle system as well. Never had a leak but then i am used to working with hydraulics at 4100psi and have done a lot of bending over the years. Even a cheap bender will do copper or kuni, i wouldn't do it by hand as the pipes will definately oval or...

standard exhaust - gap between exhaust and heat exchanger

I know this is an old thread but i just had this issue on a beetle and was advised to pick open the crimped seams on the exhaust heater pods and reshape to fit but this ended up with huge gaps everywhere and would have needed welding and looked a mess. I ended up removing the heater pods that...

Decent quality self tapping screws... Recommendation?

Sounds like you had roofing screws before, they have a reaming tip on them that cuts/pushes out the hole to the correct size. if the heads are snapping off you are probably drilling too small a hole, invest in a good quality correct size drill bit. I use stainless too, they are strong but if...

    Door Card Covering

Good advice. You can definitely do it yourself, I made hide leather covered cards in similar fashion with no experience in trimming. No staples, just high temp brush on upholstery adhesive that has lasted 5 years so far. The leather is only glued on the back where its folded over and the...

    Removing Brake MC

Dude, I saw your post too late. Mine is the same, it's a real *****. It may help in future though: I got a small cold chisel (tapered, flat tip) and wedged it (with some help from the hammer) between the curved shroud bit and the flat of the bolt head to lock the bolt still while undoing...

    Brake squeal

Hey Kev, It could be several causes but I follow this process: Remove the drum, clean the brake assembly and drum with brake cleaner to degrease. Measure drum thickness and shoe thickness with a micrometer or caliper to make sure minimum thickness at least. If not then replace them. Then when...

    Insurance Providers

I'm with HIC (Herts) owned by Adrian Flux now so they won't quote against each other. Got a good deal though £183 for the year fully comp, keys, £2000 valuables, agreed value, 3 points. Forget about insurance breakdown cover, it's a rip off or cheap but very limited. I got AA £10 a month for...

    Crossover brakes

They're not much different in design. They may fit if you get the whole set-up including the back plates, not sure though perhaps someone elase will know. I would not replace them though as all but one part is available. I recently had to work on the rear brakes on my '72 as the spring steel...

    Alternator thread repair?

Have you stripped the thread completely? If not you can clean up with a thread chaser or thread file or carefully with a tiny file. If its not damaged all the way to the end you could space with washers to reach the good bit. Make sure you have a few threads to bite on and maybe use some...

Have I let myself in for a world of hurt?

Those pics take me back. Looks like you have the makings of a good bus there. You'll have to get used to being a pariah!

    Really really bad Mpg

What carb did you have before and how did it perform? What sort of fuel economy are you getting with an empty vehicle on a normal run? Sounds like someone has done a lot of "improvements" to your motor over the years, like most old VW's! Some history of what was replaced and when would be very...

    Petrol tank refurb

Hi Craig, Bought the hose from Advanced Fluid Solutions. they are a reputable online supplier, and on ebay as well I think. Branded, genuine Cohline hose, flouro-lined it's the best quality but is expensive at £18+ per metre. I got the same stuff in 3 sizes to fit the supply, small breather and...
