    Ouch, Esso 99 is expensive!

South Africans ran diesels on refined **** seed oil for decades due to trade embargo's. There's always a workaround. I can see sales of log burners soaring. The current fuel prices relate to a huge increase in tax profits for the untrustworthy, corrupt UK government. 5p reduction still means...

    Decent quality aerial?

I bought one less than two years ago from c&c. Not hirshmann but nice quality (I think german) repro. Might be worth a look. I haven't fitted it yet but, the old round dual mount chromed plastic one has just snapped off at its thread so it won't be long.

Fire suppression system for early bays

Fireboy is a great choice, if it's ever needed you will be glad you spent the money. I commission their FM200 gas systems on super yachts, they are the nuts. Doing a bit of work in my engine bay at the moment, Fireboy system to come when I've completed the work, hopefully at mates rates.

Can anyone help me solve a mystery with the origins of my bus please?!

If you have the original vin plates there is an m-plate decoder free to use online, this will break down the vin plate and give you a lot of info.

Fuses on split charge leisure battery setup

The fuse is there to protect the cable but its the amps flowing through the cable that dictate the cable and fuse rating. The cable may need to be thicker to avoid volt drop over distance, don't just use the cable you already have. TBF this system all needs to be matched, taking into account...

    Anti roll bar bush

Glad you got it sorted. A tip for the future is nail pulling pliers or oetiker clamp pliers. They are perfect for this, you can just slide the clip on easy and only tap the last bit with the hammer. If the clamps are plated/passivated or painted it saves damaging the surface.

    Spark plugs & leads

As standard, the best it would have had is a 10,000V coil and 6mm leads. The old favourite bosch blue coil was a popular upgrade at 20,000V. I run standard recommended bosch plugs, slightly bigger gapped than standard, pertronix leads in black, 40,000V pertronix flamethrower coil black...

    Fixing rear bump stops

From memory, (not so great anymore) something locates in the groove nearest the top. Is there a large horseshoe clip in amongst all that rust and *****? Give it a bit of a clean up and see whats there.

i think my bakes should be better?

I searched for EBC for my '72 crosser, no joy. They make pads for '73 on and some are listed on ebay for earlies but the listed measurements are incorrect. Most sellers give measurements so just check before you buy. I have ATE '73 on calipers on bushes with original size '72 disks...

    14” Tyre choice??

My two-penneth, based on experience with tyre shops, hope it helps with your decision: I run 185R 14C, proper load rated, 8ply sidewall, Firestone Vanhawk tyres on my OG steels. These are standard aspect ratio of 82%. I looked for correct rated, lower profile but couldn't find any to fit and...

    Ramblings of a thinker

What brand are you buying? Have you checked it is correctly rated for your engine? They are not all the same. It's best to steer clear of cheap stuff. Dave Sent from my SM-A320FL using Tapatalk

    Carb Help

Its down to cost and ability to get the twin carbs tuned properly. I think he means the empi 34pict 3 single carb copies. And for what it's worth, he's right. I have one on my TP and they are **** straight out of the box brand new. It runs almost as bad as the old worn out Solex that it...

    Exhaust sitting on Moustache bar

My replacement was touching so I just used a hacksaw blade and cut the webbing down to clearance as mentioned earlier. It was a new stainless 4 into 1 collector to fit a small triangle flange, about £160 from JustKampers who told me it would fit a bus. Maybe a London double decker but not a...

    Running very hot

My brother did that Ozziedog, he got 80 miles in a volvo before it started to pack up. Earl, what oil have you used?

    Change handbrake handle

i've made some real nice ones out of Oak if you are interested. They are varnished with a glass-like finish. The pin is replaced with a Stainless dome head Allen bolt and they have to be bonded on with Araldite or similar to keep the strength. Had one on my bus for years and never seen...

Brake Fluid Filler to Master Cylinder Hose - What is special about it?

I got one from C&C but turned out to be the shorter one for under the seat reservoir. I used EPDM hose from Advanced Fluid Solutions as they say it's good for brake fluid that's not under pressure. They are experts and sell 100% biofuel hose too. It's been on a couple of years with no issue...

    Alternator plate cracked.

Dude, change your belt if you haven't already. It will be too tight and will ruin your alternator bearings over time. Almost all of the Classic VW suppliers sell this one: FB Optibelt 11.3x912La, I have one on my 1600tp and its fine. Its best to get as wide as possible that will fit in the...

    indicator stalk

on the switch wiring, i would find out what the other wires are for as you may have to join some and connect them to the same terminal to make the whole thing work. If you know what year the switch was originally for then the wiring diagrams are free on "the samba" and you should be able to...

    indicator stalk

check you don't have a blown indicator bulb or bad connection at a lamp as this can cause the brake light to flash instead. It might just be coincidence that its happened now while you are working on the stalk or there may have been a surge at some point that has blown a bulb. I still...
