    Water in engine

 Apparently the new styled (Mexican) thermostats do not use a spring like the old ones: I assume it is because they have a 'return' spring and a 'fail safe' spring would be working against it. This is where the temperature and oil pressure gauges hopefully protect against a fault...

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

It's a new nut from VWH or JK, I cannot remember which. I'll take another closer look when I'm next with the bus. Will be dreaming about felt tonight.  :?

    Water in engine

Great idea, but no you cannot as the threaded bar would foul the top of the case and one set of flaps is higher than the other, plus you have to get passed the oil cooler mount, hence the bend in my version, although it is a large bend which allowed for lots of adjustment tweaks. :D
  5. cunning plan

    Water in engine

I know what you are saying and if I could find a stock link-bar for 'reasonable' money, then I would change it, but I had the choice of flaps with no thermostat or Link-bar and fabricating my own Link-bar to enable the thermostat to work, and by working I mean at least to 'full cooling' even if...

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Roger that :character0036: The glandnut on my engine is just a cylinder with needle bearings in it, no felt? :o Dam felt!

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Thanks for the tips! 8) But no, it is a different part to the O-Ring Seal behind the flywheel and the main rear flywheel-seal that you tap into the case, but as atafonso mentioned, he thinks the 'Felt-Washer' is for the Type 4, so not relevant for us. :D

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Thanks Abel, I was not sure, but saw it appear on a few diagrams. Also, I'll check for springyness when I get them. Happy new year to you sir. :party0047:

    Water in engine

A very good point, although I spent extra time tweaking and caressing the bar into a shape to ensure that both sets of flaps open fully, but due to the play in the setup, I could not get both sets to close fully when the thermostat had cooled down unless I adjusted it again, however that would...

    Water in engine

I think the flaps are the same on twin and single ports, I believe the only difference is the 'link bar' at the back, however, you can make your own bar from some round-bar bent to shape and two brackets. :D

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Just about to place the order for the shims, but quick question, is the Felt Seal also required? https://www.vwheritage.com/021105311-flywheel-felt-seal-vw-spare This bit ^ Or is that just for the 2 Litre / Type 3/4 engine? :Poke: :sign0009:

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Ah, good call! I forgot about M7, just found Cool Air also has the 24/25mm shims. :party0021:
  13. cunning plan

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

So, now I know what the dial was trying to indicate, I measured the end-float with no-shims again and had a measurement of around 0.82mm. 0.82 - 0.08 (@atafonso 's value to aim for) = 0.74mm Rounded up, it probably means I need x3 shims of a value of 0.25mm to have a total of 0.75mm. :|...

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

So I have it set way, way too tight! Thank you both for taking the time to explain, I'll take another go at it tomorrow! :character0036: Merry Christmas! :party0047:
  15. cunning plan

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Please could someone confirm if my understanding / measurement is correct? I read that the end float needs to be between 3 to 5 thousands or 0.0762 - 0.127mm. The Dial Test Indicator I have is in mm. After adding various shims, I have got the end float to measure between the two red...

To lite steer or not to lite steer

On a technical note, does anyone how do these units work out of interest? On a simple level, I presume it senses movement of the wheel and multiplies the force applied to the steering box. However, on a more detailed level, how does it do it? Is there a physical connection from the unit to the...

    broken engine stud

If it is an old case that I was not planning to rebuild in the future and just needed to get the engine back together and working again, then yes I would bond it in, possibly plasticweld stuff? If it is a new case that I would like to rebuild a few times, I would probably look into taking the...
