    Starter motor/solenoid issues

Just replace the solenoid there is nothing that can be done to recondition it (apart from cleaning the terminals up) and ususally its the solenoid braking down (its only a coil) that is the issue with hot start problems

    Try and help a newbie - VW T2 1971

An MOT is the easy part, fix the chassis / sills, adjust the brakes, NO EMISSION test so just get the engine running and driving it there is enough, all electrics working job done, doesn't make it safe though! But dont let ozzy put you off (he has issues with Stella  ) go and have a good...

    Try and help a newbie - VW T2 1971

Definately looks like a 71 (my old van was also a J reg Sept 70 so a '71 model / year) If it needs an engine you are looking at close to £2k to buy a turn key (fit and go) but the engines are easy enough to rebuild if your confident enough with some spanners. As for the body work / welding think...

    No Power...1600 SP

Bottom end almost complete, didn;t realise that a crank oil seal isn't part of rebuild gasket kit  so need to order 1 of these. Still trying to decide whether to build with single port or twin port heads, occasionally think single as i have everything i need but then think twin to uprate...

How do you remove / refit the cam gear from the crank?

Well i cut the bearing off as i was replacing it anyway and used a 3 leg bearing puller. To refit it i boiled the kettle dropped the gear into the hot water, had a cup of tea, and then dropped the gear into place, it needed a little help from a hammer and a punch but nothing major.

    No Power...1600 SP

I'm currently completely rebuilding the engine, there were loose bolts on the heads, on the engine case itself, the rocker arms so decided to strip and fully rebuild it with new bearings.

    boiling battery????????????

Yes deffo sounds like a regulator is required, not to sure that a type 4 alternator regulator is the same as a type 1 regulator though (i take it you do have a alternator and not a dynamo?)

Getting a little more poke out of a 1600TP

Standard brake horse out of the factory was 50hp ( i think) As you've already said twin carbs and an exhaust to match are the easiest ways, after that then its bigger cc's but this means machining the case and heads for bigger barrels and pistons, a different cam can help but it all really...

Cylinder head removal - tips please

Have a look under No1 / No2 cylinders (RHD side as looking at it) if the thermostat is there then you will be able to see it. there is a bracket that screws onto the case that holds the thermostat in place, the bar then up through the heads and connects to the flaps inside the fan shroud.

    SVDA dizzy question

Most SVDA's are set to 7.5 deg BTDC with vac hose disconnected AND BLOCKED. In all honesty though you need to know the dizzy number (205**) and then have a look at the old volks home web site and set it accordingly. Electronic ignition does not effect the timing settings it just gives you an...
