Thoughts please on the best source for new SVDA distributor

Apart from the cost .... is there anything against 123? Having done a quick search everything seems pretty positive. The Pertronix is £162.50 at VW Heritage The 123 is 239 Euros (£184.50) at Leenapk .... https://www.123ignitionshop.com/gb/volkswagen/21-123VWRV.html"...

Thoughts please on the best source for new SVDA distributor

Thanks Alex, I would be interested to have your thoughts on the difference between the Pertronix unit and the SSP unit https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/bay-bus/043905205R/distributor-vacuum-advance-t1-61-79-t2-61-79/?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return...

Thoughts please on the best source for new SVDA distributor

Has anyone got any thoughts or recommendations/advice on where to source the best new SVDA for 1600TP (stock). 2nd hand original bosch units appear thin on the ground. I have been advised that many of the repro units have week or badly balanced springs which means that timing is hit and miss...

Hope someone might have some ideas. a bit of history to date... I have a 1600 twin port with SVDA points distributor with dwell checked at 50 degrees( supplied by the guys at Type2Detectives) and 34 pict 3 carb (a rebuilt unit from Tim at Volkzbits). The engine was dying on idle though it...

Oil Leak ... any suggestions of source?

Hi, I wondered if anybody had any thoughts/suggestions. I have recently had the engine in my bay out, stripped to the long block and replaced all the seals and gaskets .... Pushrod tubes seals, rocker cover seals, oil cooler seals (all four), alternator stand and filler gaskets, fuel pump...

Lots of tinware & engine stuff type 1,2 & 4

Hi, I am looking for some lower tinware. The three piece set for under the push rod tubes, the lower right piece below the head (to the right of the pull and the pulley tin itself For a 1500 motor up graded at some point to 1600 twin port. I wondered what you had and what the cost might be...

1300 Twin Port to 1600 Twin Port

Thanks Weeboll. Looks like complete top end re-build kit then! This project .... if I go for it .... will be a learning experience rather than vital for my van at the moment. The engine I believe is an original 1300 twin port complete with dual relief case and dog house fan shroud. Regards Tim

1300 Twin Port to 1600 Twin Port

I am considering having a go at an engine re-build. If I have a 1300 Twin Port I have read that this can be simply upgraded to a 1600 by using the appropriate barrels and pistons. Will the heads also need changing or can the 1300 heads be used? ... the valves I believe are the same size on...

Engine has suddenly started to die if revved

Hi Private jobs, Have found another dizzy cap and fingers crossed that seems to have sorted it ..... can't make it die anymore! feel a bit silly now! Will road test it later this coming week once I have freed up the back wheels from the handbrake Grrrr! Thanks for the other thoughts .... will...

Engine has suddenly started to die if revved

Hi Private jobs, Comments noted on fuel filter .... makes sense to me. I'm thinking the distributor cap is the problem as the carbon centre is almost non existent! What effect would that have? Yes the air filter is from a beetle .... it fits ok because a previous owner hacked out part of the...

Engine has suddenly started to die if revved

Hi Gvee, thanks for responding. Fuel lines are all pretty new .... I put new on over the summer. Filter is now 10 months old .... would it be due a change (± 5000 miles) ?. There seems to be differing opinions about the position of the fuel filter - mine was put there by one reputable...

Engine has suddenly started to die if revved

Hi Private jobs, Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately it is electronic ignition so no points or condenser .... am told with electronic they either work or die which would be a different symptom. Tim

Engine has suddenly started to die if revved

Doghouse Oil Cooler upgrade - seals & spacer washers?

Hi, I am currently considering up grading my cooling set up to a doghouse (currently is an in-line set up). I have a 1500 single port case which at some stage was upgraded to a 1600 dual port .... I read that this makes the in line set up borderline for cooling if much motorway cruising is...

    Oil Drip from Oil filler

Andy, I have already ordered the JK socket head with the two locators to fit the threaded nut ... it appears to fit on a 1/2" extension to the ratchet handle of the socket set - but thanks for the offer. I assume if you got yours in the states its the Empi tool similar in principle to a stud...

    Oil Drip from Oil filler

Thanks for the advice sparkywig - much appreciated. Is it an easy fix ... or do I need a special tool. Is there a replacement gasket/seal required? Will there be a problem with the alternator or can I simply turn it through 180? Do you think the drip is because the filler is leaking as well...

    Oil Drip from Oil filler

Nipped out to take a few pictures of the guilty item .... a general one of the engine bay with pre-heat hose moved out of the way and a detail with a guilty drip in evidence! Is this the wrong way round?
