    Rewiring dash clock

The original clock in my 68 is permanently live - off the top of my head I can’t remember where it is fed from. The mechanism works by some sort of electro magnet (don’t quote me on this!) - this fires a spring-loaded mechanism away from it, and then over the course of the next few minutes, as...

    Wheel nuts

Is the problem that your nuts are too short or are your studs too long? I believe the recommendation is a minimum of 7 turns on a nut / bolt to provide adequate wheel support - how many do you have? If the studs can’t be trimmed, maybe the option is to carry a slip-on spacer when using the...

    Awnings and roof-racks

Those figure of 8 attachments are really intended for a proper J rail rather than our gutters. The problem with putting them on the gutters is that they end up sticking upwards, rather than being flat. As we found out on a windy campsite, the twisting motion this then places on them causes them...

    Torsion arm bearings

I used one of the suspension leaves from the opposite end of the beam and gently tapped against the race working my way around it. I wouldn’t recommend doing it if you are planning on reusing the bearing, but I’m assuming you’re removing because you’re replacing. The proper way would be a slide...

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

It’s possible I’m just being overly cautious and because of the vacuum pulled here, the only thing that will build up to any extent would be condensation, and that will hopefully dissipate once the engine is hot. But whatever the solution is, I think we’ve ascertained that my filler shouldn’t...

    Topping-up oil

That might explain the lack of recent pants chafing, and the detergent bubbles coming out of my dipstick [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Topping-up oil

This is really something that shouldn’t bug me... but OCD clearly not helping! For some years I’ve used one of those refillable jugs with a corrugated spout to fill the engine with oil and for carrying around if top-ups are required. And for some years it has really annoyed me that it weeps oil...

    Exhaust fumes

That was our issue - tailgate alignment. Definitely worth checking to make sure that it is giving a good seal all the way round. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Thanks for that. Makes sense if the breather openings are in the same positions as in that pic it would be at the bottom. But as the oil pools in the breather it will drop out of the draft tube, stopping the breather from getting flooded.

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Same as advised above, which puts the inner opening at the top of the filler. Thanks for confirming. I think you’re right about the quality, an OG filler is probably the right solution... Out of interest, what stops your filler from filling with oil over time? Presumably some vapour condenses...

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Can’t get to the inside join unfortunately without separating the two halves! Your positioning makes sense to me in that the breather opening inside the filler is at the top, so at least you don’t end up pouring oil into it when changing / topping up. But what I wondered is what happens when...

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Took the breather / filler off the van yesterday to get some better photos: I’d appreciate if someone with an OG filler could take a similar photo of the inside so that I can see where the opening to the breather outlet sits. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Brake light switch leaking?

Crap aftermarket parts, it’s not uncommon unfortunately for brake switches to leak, or not work out of the box. Replace with a branded one if possible! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

This is not the easiest thing to take a photo of whilst in situ... Hopefully you can see that with the breather hose outlet positioned as per the original photos (in the 12 o’clock position), the opening into it sits around the 10 o’clock position. If this fills with oil over time, which it...

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Thanks for the reply - yes that is positioned as per Bentley (there is a photo in there) as I’ve not long fitted the alternator stand. Some of the oil you’re seeing is from when I poured it in, but either way, over time it seems there will always be a pool accumulate in both those spots as...

Oil filler / breather without drain tube

Hi folks, I’d normally have a crack at playing around with this, but currently I am waiting for some parts, and the next journey I make with the van will probably be setting off on a short holiday. So I recently purchased one of the aftermarket oil filler / breather things to replace the billet...

    Stay safe

Managed to put in about 100 miles yesterday running various errands that required something bigger than the daily drive. A lovely feeling to be out and about in it, and even in the blazing temperatures we had, it was a very enjoyable drive with no mishaps. Must admit, I was a bit twitchy on the...

    Alternator face plate -gap?

Hi Mike, having stripped my new Bosch down recently, I can confirm that this is correct. You cannot see the mating face until you pull it apart, but it all becomes clear then!
