Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

If you look from the nut side, there is a sort of retainer, then a little space, then the bearing. In that space it's supposed to be the felt. But most are already gone after 40+years🤣🤣 Abel

    Water in engine

That's what i was fearing🤔 I would only make a bar if i had one to compare and be absolutely sure the holes/dimensions are the same, otherwise i would not install the flaps if the engine had to go back in service and could not wait. Too risky imho. Yes, just having the flaps is better then not...

Tha ks Craig, hope you had good fun in these holydays🤗 On the type 1 the felt is inside the gland nut, next to the input shaft bearing bearing😁 Abel

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Not needed, that’s for a type4😉 Make sure the shims you get are hardened steel, they should spring back when you try to bend them slightly. If they bend easily i would not use as these types wear really quick. Nothing beats the stock shims by the way🙄 Abel😀

    Water in engine

You can make a bar with holes easily, but a bar in the exact size and hole positions is not that easy. If the holes are not exactly in the same spot, you can open one side flap’s more than the other and that side of the engine can have less flow therefore getting hotter. I would not try that...

Dial Test Indicator Measurement Is this / End Float - Correct?

Jinx, your explanation of the gauge is spot on👍 0.07-0.13mm is what VW recommends. Based on my experience, i would not use any less than 0.07mm, even 0.06mm can cause a seizure. I normally shoot for 0.08-0.09mm. It takes a lot of time, but as you all know, perfection takes time😁 Abel

    broken engine stud

There is nothing wrong with a helicoil there, in fact, it was one of the last upgrades VW has made in these engines before end of production. All the new cases from VW Brazil comes with a helicoil there, also in the holes for the engine support bar. Abel

    AircooledHut Engines

Some shops had a book and people would come during the year and buy stamps that did cost a fixed price, so at the end of the year they would cash in all those stamps and traded for goods at the shop. Clever. Also used to be called Layby just like in Oz😄 Abel

    broken engine stud

If you can, install a helicoil there as this is how the late cases are and now the new Brazilian ones are coming. It makes it easier to remove the stud if you need to also😉 Abel

    1973 Oil Filter?

If it has a type4 1700cc engine then there is an oil filter. For the type 1 based 1600, originally came without one. Abel

Earlybay with 6 rib and 2L type4.. can't shift all gears

Spot on ;) Not that the 45's will never work well at low rpm's, if you have a big engine there will be more port velocity and they will work much better than on a 1776 for example. But what will really dictate if they will work ok or not is the the diameter of the venturis compared to the...

Earlybay with 6 rib and 2L type4.. can't shift all gears

It will be much more driveable at lower rpm’s and also still flow enough for the size of engine and cam. The whole combo has to be matched in order to get the best results; heads, cam, carbs, intake and exhaust😃 Abel

    1971 Early Bay Westy

I have a client that has a Red9. He came to me asking to double check the torque of the bolts holding the susp to the body. They were all loose, because there is a gap between the body and the susp mounts, the bolts cannot hold properly. I had to make a custom shim on the exact profile so i...
