I was thinking on an Early Bay exhaust. I suppose you would have to weld an 18mm socket onto the bottom of the silencer, (muffler). That way you would get a mix of gasses from all cylinders.

If he had the engine on a stand and the fuel on the floor then the pump probably can't lift the fuel that high. The beetle fuel tank in comparison is relatively on the same level as the pump so will have enough lift to pump from the tank.

If the above doesn't sort it, drain the petrol from the carb float bowl. It may have water in the bottom of it and gets picked up when you try to accelerate. If you are using E10 fuel, this is becoming a problem as the Ethanol absorbs water and it deposits on the lowest part of the petrol tank...
