    Oil drain leaks, stoppable?

Thanks all, at least I'm not going mad.

    Oil drain leaks, stoppable?

I'm fed up with oil leaks from the sump cover, what am I doing wrong? A few years ago I replaced all the studs that the sump cover uses and the nuts, domed type. I have an aftermarket sump cover with a large drain plug in the middle, I pulled this all off last weekend to clean the gauze and...

    Cutting out when hot

Carry a spare sparkplug with you, when it wont start, pull a lead from a sparkplug, plug in the spare one and ground it to see if you are getting a spark or not when cranking over. I had a problem with my Empi electronic points module breaking down causing no spark randomly. Otherwise I'd...

    Fire extinguishers

This might help: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65346 I'm afraid my photos are still on Photobucket so you need the workaround add-in thingy to see them.

    Which workshop manual for crossover

I use the Bentley manual but my xover is a 1600 tp so more in common with earlier bays than lates. I think the Bentley manual covers all models but I can’t get to it right now. Only downside is I think the bentleys are more US focussed but it’s not caused me any problems.

Beetle exhaust on a 1600 early bay westy

Same here, used to run a standard beetle exhaust on my 1600tp xover, straight bolt on and made that nice whistly beetle noise.

    Timing (groan)

So to follow up with where I got to. My points let me down on the way home from Volks World and as I have had enough of chinese copies I decided to go all out and buy a 123 dizzy knowing it replaces the chinese dizzy, points and will serve me in the future if I get around to an updated engine...

    Timing (groan)

Thanks. I've ordered a new timing light, mine just cuts out at about 2k rpm so I can't tell the max advance. I'll go this route first, everything else is good and generally German, I had it timed up to 0deg TDC running with vacuum connected and it was the best it's run. I'm not sure if the...

    Timing (groan)

Thanks but how does this answer my question? Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

    Timing (groan)

OK, so a complete can of worms topic I know but I've got to ask the question. I have a '72 bus fitted with a Beetle Type 1 Twinport 1600 (I don't have the engine code to hand, I think it's AD?) Bone stock Solex 34 Pict 3, oil bath filter and everything, even points in the dizzy! but the SVDA...

New here / retro hifi head unit

Not wanting to sound like an advocate for Retrosounds here but the beauty of the unit is that it fits in a pretty small hole in the dash and you use a vast selection of plates and knob's (ooeerr) to make it look however you like. I still have the original size hole in my dash, no enlarging...

    Door card refurb

Thanks guys, very helpful. Webbaldo, that looks like a very nice job, where did you source the vinyl and what thickness foam did you use?

    Door card refurb

I'm thinking of having a go at refurbing all the interior panels as mine are OG and knackered. I wondered what the difference was with hardboard vs ply panels and is it more cost effective to buy the ready made cards to save the time of cutting out my own? Hardboard or Ply? I've watched so may...

    Carb refurb

The spindle bearings are easy to replace as well, there is a guy on ebay selling brass/bronze? versions that you get down to size with emery paper for a nice fit. I bought a Solex a while ago and refurb'd it. It didn't actually make any difference to my running issues but at least I know I have...

    Heat exchangers fitting

I've done the same, well worth the cost of the steel hose, much neater and longer lasting solution.

    Fire prevention/Fireblitz

I changed my powder one for an AFFF one after reading a few websites, some more including pic's here: (although you might need the Chrome Photobucket fixing add-in if that makes sense) http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65346 Mags

    Electric Ignition, Yes or No?

I run Pertronix in another old car and it's been fine for many years. I fitted an Empi unit to my bus when I first bought it (12+ years ago) and have only recently discovered it was failing by cutting out and randomly working again when it felt like it, I went back to points just to prove this...

Who in the UK/Europe has successfully air bagged their bus

Interesting comments on the Red9 Ozziedog. Assume you are talking about the full double wishbone setup? FWIW I've been running one for about 2 & 1/2 years now and I've not done big mileage but I'm very happy with it now. The first few months were a nightmare with the Red9 made bevel box (there's...

    Retrosound stereo install

I'm not sure I had to, I could take a look/picture at the weekend but that's a bit late for you now.
