Agreed, check the cable first before dropping the engine, haynes manual has the spec for the required bend in the cable conduit.

I got the best quality beetle twin port one from vwheritage then chopped off and filled the preheat holes (got twin carbs) and welded a bung for my o2 sensor into it. Go cheapie taper tips on it at the moment gonna swap them for some stainless ones I think!

I just bent mine a bit so that it cleared the adjuster bolt. Been working fine for 6 months plus.

Is your beam already lowered?

I believe it was anodised originally, there's a thread on here about making a chemical solution to remove the anodising, maybe drain cleaner and then polishing the trim. I guess waxing it & regular buffing will keep it Looking good then.
