    Rear bumper orientation

I think I've had mine on upside down—just trying to fit some corner brackets and they will only line up if I flip the bumper, is this photo correct: Centre line crease is *above* the mounting points

Initial engine break-in setup — running rough

Hi folks, I'm trying to set my engine up to drive it for the first trial drive (page 171 in Tom Wilson's "How to rebuild your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine book) however I'm concerned by what sounds like a knock, and also it's developed a regular "miss" (?!) after my initial timing and carb...

    Engine case swap

My current 1600cc twinport engine case has bolts instead of studs to secure the oil sump plate—obviously, one has stripped and the engine is leaking oil, so it requires the engine removing and the case splitting to extract it and replace with the correct specification sump studs. This engine...

    Cylinder Head Comparison

I'm about to purchase a set of dual port cylinder heads for my stock 1600cc motor, but I don't know which to go for. There seem to be 2 common types, Auto Linea ones and EMPI ones. At Machine7, the Auto Linea ones have been recommended and are slightly more costly, but at most other outlets...

    Oil pressure relief valves

Hi guys I have finally been able to get back on my bus, I am rebuilding the engine and have removed the oil pressure relief valves: The top one with the valve is nearest the flywheel, but the other just has a longer spring and no valve. Is this correct or should they both be identical...

WANTED - Pair of twinport cylinder heads

Hey guys I need a pair of cylinder heads to complete my 1600 twinport rebuild and I just don't have the cash to buy new. Has anybody got a pair lying around? I can strip and clean them and lap in the valves so it doesn't matter if they are old or used, but obviously don't have the machinery or...

Removing starter motor on lowered bays

    A note on cutting discs

As I am currently replacing my roof, I have been through a lot of 1mm cutting discs. I decided to try a different type each time I ran out to see if it was worth paying extra for "better quality". Here are my findings for those that have wondered the same thing. I got all my discs from Screwfix...

    Genuine Rear Quarter Panel

Hey can you guys tell me the difference between the Genuine Late Bay Rear Quarter Panel as sold by the likes of Schofield, JK etc and the original early bay? Hey guys my engine has developed a fairly big oil leak, it appears to be originating from where the barrels meet the block, but only on the nearside. Can I tighten these up with the engine still in the vehicle by torqueing up the head bolts? Engine is a 1600 twinport.
