    Role Call !!!

Hello from Bristol, still working full time. I have worked from home for the past 5 years but now have a wife and three kids for company (which is not as fun as it sounds believe me). Anyway I should count my blessings as I've been largely unaffected by what is going on and its given me an...

    mot changes

Here is an article which goes in to some more detail and defines the process for applying for MOT exemption. You may have seen it already. So apologies if I’m reposting old stuff. The article also has details of what would constitute a change to a vehicle that would negate its MOT exemption. It...

    Missing tinware piece

Just out of interest my tin looks similar to yours and it’s actually my pulley tin that covers that gap. Although I can’t say where my tin has come from but I’m in the process of replacing it piece by piece with as much original tin as I can. This is my pulley tin And this is my front tin...

    Vapour lock

Thanks for the advice re the tank & breathers, I will check. I had covered some of the other tests already. I should have mentioned before but to give you some background. I have completed a top end rebuild and replaced the coil, plugs and leads, plug gaps set. Valve gaps set ok, electronic...

    Vapour lock

So we got caught in the tail backs on M5 over the weekend. We had been cruising up the Mway around 55mph for an hour or so then hit very slow moving traffic, we drove in a stop start fashion for around 2 hrs and then the engine got more spluttry then died and would restart. We got to the hard...

    Which thread locker?

Hi guys, Which thread locker do you apply when torquing the gland nut? There seems to be a bewildering array of numbers. Loctite 272 seems to be the strongest I can find. Any ideas?

    Piston Weight

Thanks for the responses, they were bought as part of a top end rebuild kit from Machine 7, i will try to swap the pins around as well to get them as close to each other. At the moment im just after a stock setup. Maybe i will put a thread up when i start the rebuild. At the moment i have just...

    Piston Weight

I am doing a top end rebuild and was wondering about the tolerances for piston weights. I have a set of Mahle cast pistons including pins & rings with 3 that weigh 504 grams and one that weighs 498 grams. Is the difference between them acceptable or should I machine the other 3 down to the...

    What speed to change gear?!?

Excellent article Sparky, I have always gone by driving up to 10mph in first, up to 20 in second, 30 third etc. So it looks like I've been doing something half right after all. However, I'm not sure about the following sentence from the article: "When an particular traffic situation makes it...

    camping with trailer

+1 for the hitch lock or a wheel clamp. cheap(ish) solution compared to the cost of a trailer. Having said that we haven't ever had any kind of theft or unwanted visitors on the camp sites we go to. After all you only zip up your tent or awning, and a zip isn't very secure 😂

Drive your VW to work Day.

Any one heard of this one. Stumbled across it on one of the many VW calendars on the interweb. It's June 22nd (this Thursday). Any one doing it? I might, but then I've only got a 5 mile journey from home to the office

    Losing the rear seatbelts

Lol, no problem, it is bolted to a proper seatbelt mounting spreader plate behind the strut. You got me thinking now  However, in our vehicles due to their age I'm not sure if the rear belts are checked as part of the MOT but it's been at my local garage plenty of times for body work...

    Ghosts in the bay

+1 for a short of some sort in the solenoid or ignition circuit. One side of the solenoid takes a permanent live from the battery the other is fed via the ignition (unless you have a hot start relay).

    Losing the rear seatbelts

Hopefully you can make sense if the pics. The top of my rear wheel arches are cheese. So the garage relocated the end mount to the reinforcing struts behind the rear panels I had to modify the panel card at the bottom but it cant be seen as it's below the seat. Hope this helps
