    Best mod.... new gearbox

Totally agree. There was night and day difference when I converted my bus to a 5 speed from the standard 3rib. Mine now does 3500rpm at 70mph which makes much more comfortable on motorways. It is markedly quieter than it used to be when plodding along at 55mph too.

How long have you owned your current bus?

Looking back thought Beakey's post history, it seems that they sold this bus: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?p=551127#p551127 Last V5C issued 2019 :) On the post subject, I've now had mine more than 15 years :)

Help! St Columb area (Cornwall) Cv Joint Bolt

Edit: I'm a bit late to the party, sorry :) I don't know the size offhand, but eBay has high tensile bolts available pretty readily - only hassle would be the postage time :) I'd probably be brave/stupid enough to try driving with only 5, but that's not a recommendation!

    Stock exhaust question

Don't forget reproduction heat exchangers are... pants, when compared with OE :) If it's just the outer skin that is holed, they can be repaired. Don't skimp on them though, as if the exhaust pipe is leaking inside, you'll get exhaust fumes in the cab...

    Stock exhaust question

Agreed with GVEE. If it's otherwise sound, I'd probably stick a big slug of weld all round the backbox to pipe outlet joint and hope it lasted a few more years. But otherwise, just replace it - stock silencers aren't too pricey. If you can get a stock style stainless one, even better - and not...

    Anti roll bars

You couldn't when I made mine, however: (I can't see them on his website though, probably worth a phone call!) :)

    Anti roll bars

No trouble - mine has been fine for 10+ years now so it should be OK. That said, I'd definitely consider buying a new one rather than making one! :)

    Anti roll bars

I'm sure a one piece one is a better solution. However, I made mine before one piece ones became available. I cut mine down, bevelled the ends to ensure good penetration, then sleeved it with the sleeve having seam welds at each end and plug welds along their length. As it's a moderate spring...

    What Camshaft?

With that in mind, I fitted a Porsche 356 alternator/dynamo pulley. It keeps the fan speeds up as it is smaller. Does help keep my bus cooler, although sitting at 3500rpm+ (70mph in 5th) for any time it does still get hot. Sitting at 3000rpm (60mph) it stays around 90-95c all day. Fitting an...

    Anti roll bars

This is an interesting subject for me. I've got a 4" narrowed beam, with a standard anti-roll bar narrowed by the same amount. I find that my bus isn't affected too much by crosswinds unless they are very strong. With the 1955cc engine/5 speed the steering etc is comfortable at 70-80mph on...

DRLA 36 Dual carbs, to banjo or not to banjo

I've always run mine with a stock pump (and pressure regulator), with the pump linked to the left carb and then a line from the LH banjo to RH carb. I think either way is OK. :)

    One sweep wiper button

It's a very neat solution. I'd be tempted to go for it if I hadn't already spent the money on the velleman kit. That said, how likely am I to need 3 different intermittent speeds? :)

    One sweep wiper button

Just go careful, as latebays have totally different wiper switches and mechanisms, and the wiring for them is very different. A '71 shouldn't have a wiper relay from factory, to the best of my knowledge (mine doesn't). I've used the '99' relay on a couple of other cars and find the programmable...

    5 speed box ?

Actually the 5-speed box worked well with my twin carb 1600. As 4th gear is the same as a standard bus, it had the advantage you could drop down to 4th on motorway hills and maintain 55-60mph as you would do normally. The only issue with the 1600 and 5 speed box is first gear is a bit tall...

    5 speed box ?

And yes, the gearbox-engine mounting uses the same 4 bolt pattern. You need to exchange the lower studs on the engine for longer ones, as the Porsche bellhousing is deeper where they go through.

    5 speed box ?

I posted a how to guide here: https://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?t=60286 :) Happy to help if you've any questions! It's not too bad, the fabrication is fairly straightforward so long as you have a welder for the shift linkage, and basic tools to make the gearbox brackets.

    5 speed box ?

It's a world better than a 4 speed. You just are always more likely to have a more suitable gear for the speed you're doing. Especially useful if you only have modest horsepower - my 1955cc is only around 100bhp. The 901 gearbox I have has a taller first, second and third gears so they all...

    5 speed box ?

What's wrong with a dogleg box? Plenty of cars have them, and when you're on the move it makes sense, as you only go into first when you're stopped. It doesn't take much to get used to it. I fitted a Porsche 901 5-speed gearbox to my bus several years ago and it works great - including taking...

    Gearbox oil

Good stuff :) I've had at least one car which has been quieter to drive after a gear oil change! Did he drain it via the bottom plug at all? If not, I'd be a little worried there could still be stuff in the bottom of the gearbox :)

    Gearbox oil

I don't know what constitutes hot enough to get the oil circulating and ensure the dirt particles are in suspension. :) I don't have any additional cooling in my gearbox for the extra cog. :D My 12 mile drive was all lower speed, perhaps a quick higher speed run would get it hotter :)
