    Fuel Pipe Deterioration...

The Volksbolts hose is made in Denmark by Codan Rubber- the best you can get. Volksbolts hose clips are the Swedish stainless ABA clips - again, the best. The machine7 stuff is unbranded generic hose so could be from anywhere. Same as the clips. Very much thr budget version. I was in there the...

    Mystery engine block code

    Porsche 914

Jake Raby over in the USA has (allegedly) proven the crapness of the Porsche cooling on a Beetle / Type4 motor. Porsche cooling is designed for Porsche 6 cylinders, after all. Some people seem to like the look.! :) Type1 (Beetle) cooling does work on a Type4 rally well : once installed. If...

    Cranks, tries to fire

Bad cranking can also be caused by a poor Earth. The engine Earths via the gearbox to the body via a strap. I looked at one Late Bay once and it was Earthing the engine out up the (metal) throttle cable.!! It's well worth doubling up on Earth straps I find. As a precaution. Easy Start is...

    Cranks, tries to fire

If there's a spark jumping from the coil to the tin then this may be indicative of the HT leads being damaged/corroded/worn. It may well be worth chucking a new set on them. If the van has been standing for a while then a squirt of Easy-Start down the air-cleaner may give it enoug of a kick up...

CSP sell fibre-glass 'top-tins' for a type 1 fan-shroud conversion...about £300 and includes the pedesatal adaptor for the generator. Of google 'Joe Cali' type 4 engine conversion : he produces a small book detailing all of the adaptions you have to make to fit the type4 in place of a type...

    Mystery engine block code

It's not listed on the guide below : which is one of the most exhaustive ones I know of.. http://www.volksbolts.com/faq/eng-codes.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; so chances are it's an after-market engine reconditioners code.

    Exhaust manifold stud?

The last 1700 I had had M8 studs (both ends). Chances are yours were M8 too but the Aluminium has stripped in the head. Helicoiling is a good option - or if there is eough meat lef in the stud-holes threads tap out to M9. My 1800 heads have M9 into the head and M8 for the nut to hold the...

    Fuel Pipe Diamiter

I must admit, there is a lot being spouted about fuel-line and clips on internet forums at the moment.....heres a quick 101 on what you need to know... Alternator conversion kits

Machine7 sell conversion kits. Alternators provide the battery with charge even at idle. Dyna-mos do not. Fuel Line Replacement

Looks like the fuel pump to the carburettor has been 'hard-lined' : which is a good idea. Proper plumbing BSP type connections are a lot more reliable than hose clips and friction seals. Make sure the fuel hose supplied with the kit is 5.5mm bore and of a R7 or preferably an R9 SAE designation...

    A question of principles?

The wife and myself were nearly killed by a bodge merchant who sold us our Rover P4. He crammed the brake master cylinder (single circuit) full of grease to stop it leaking. One day no brakes..!! Luckily the hand braked pulled us up : all 2.1/2 tonnes of it.! Only 30 miles previous...
