If you can do without a rebuild I would try to keep them original. It is a hell of a job and very difficult to get sitting right.

Are you talking pop top canvas? If you are, I haven't fitted one but was very impressed with the quality and attention to detail.

There are spindles which will accommodate late bay discs, I'm not sure how easy they are to find. (Fitted to Brazilian buses. )

You can buy a din connector for an og stereo which will allow you to play a phone or MP3 player.
