I'm not saying Airspeed's engines were cheap or anything like that btw and that there seem to be other good engine builders out there but i couldn't find one who could do all of the above for me, with the advantage of being close to home.

Ah ok, ignore my previous post then!

 No I understand, everyone's probably thinking whats this ****** worrying about, now he's splashing money out on a rebuild on a new engine :?

I just want the piece of mind I thought I was buying when I had 3 years warranty. I have thought about this for weeks anyway and the company going under was the last straw.

Des

don't think this is ******** seems very sensible....and the warranty...well as many have found

I too feel foul of a company which built me an engine, and basically built me a pile of poop. They/he has gone out of business.

As soon as it was fitted I realised something was wrong (it pulled less than my ageing 1600 - it was a 1915cc)

I started taking my bus to Mark and Matt at Autotechniks a couple of years ago, and they did a great job at improving things.

At the end of last year, I finally took the plunge and had an engine spec'd and bulit by them. It was expensive, but the workmanship/service etc. etc. is excellent. My van is now driving exactly how I wanted (i can cruise without effort on the motorway, and handle the hills when loaded up with camping). I never wanted to race on the strip.

I think you have done the right thing by going to Mark and Matt (in my humble opinion), so I hope that gives you a little more peace of mind now.

So it seems my instinct to get my engine stripped down was a wise move.

Mark just called with list of things wrong with the engine. I'm going down to see Mark early next week and he'll go through everything with me, I'll post further details. He reckoned sooner or later the engine would have seized.

  • Nothing was torqued up correctly, case bolts were hand tight.
  • Oil pickup pipe was tack welded on (I don't really know much about this)
  • Oil Pump is screwed
  • Compression is all wrong
Quite a few other components either fitted incorrectly or just shoddy parts.

I'll list everything, so those with Airpseed engines can get them checked over. Okay, it's going to cost me now to get everything repaired but I'll have a Autotechniks stamp of approval.

Okay, I've now seen my engine in pieces. Matt and Mark carefully explained all the faults in detail for me. I'll start from the Oil pick up, then work my way up.

1. As I had a deep sump the standard oil pickup pipe was not long enough so the 'Airpseed Mokeys' welded a longer pipe in place and by the look of it did this when the case halves were assembled. In doing this they managed the fracture the pipe, creating holes and there were also traces of wire in the case. Because of this the pump would struggle and would ultimately starve the engine of oil.

2. The above didn't really matter too much as the oil pump was screwed. The gears had dragged through some metal or wire so the gears were chewed.

3. The Cam shaft was worn badly (needs replacing)

4. Cam followers were starting to break up, this was the result of the CAM burn not being run. I was assured this was done at Airspeed.

5. The flywheel seal was an incorrect item and was jammed in place.

6. Bearing location dowels were also incorrect and very loose.

7. Conrod nuts, engine case nuts not torqued up.

Along with the following, lower pulley (shocking quality) held on by 3 threads of the nut, Oil strainer incorrect and jammed into place, parts around the deep sump missing seals. That's all that I remember to be honest and there were plenty of other problems with the engine.

All in all the engine was not assembled with any care, parts were jammed in, loose, not torqued correctly, some parts were missing '**** it' the customer won't notice, a complete hash job, well pissed off! but I was actually laughing at how bad this was.

So, with a schtack of new parts Autotechniks are going to rebuild it for me and also ramp it up to a 1914cc at the same time, it won't be cheap but I completely trust Mark and Matt and appreciate their time and effort in helping me out.

Hope this helps.

Not seen this thread before but I remember reading the Airspeed threads on VZi.

Commiserations mate, but sounds like you're headed for a happy ending with the engine.

But other than that... ( :( )

Really feel for you. Looks like I was lucky, I was originally looking to buy an AirSpeed engine but was warned off by somone on this forum. With the way things have turned out I'm very grateful.

I'm glad you're in good hands now.

As AUTOTECHNIKS No. 1 customer I can assure you that you won't regret going with them. (Mine was the 2276cc with the red carb tops and CSP exhaust that was probably still on the engine stand).

They built my 1776cc engine and i abused it for 7 years only replacing the valve springs once due to wear and one snapped swivel foot due to me being a leadfooted arse!

The 2276cc has again been a Joy, The only reason it was in there again was due to a shonky Aftermarket Oil Pick Up pipe which has broken where it bolts to the case and again damage inflicted again by my right foot and over exuberence at EBI4 (Where i ran a PB in my van and destroyed 3 sets of tyres doing burnouts).

They really know what they are doing and both USE their vans and not just for local trips. Mark annually does his summer pilgramage to the south of spain in his bus.

Glad to hear more people are happier spending that bit more but getting such better service.

Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend

P1020546.jpg

Mark and Matt did a superb job on my engine, they even went to the extent of re-painting my tinware, drilling the tinware and properly sealing in my original fuel pipe, all my cables have been tied together/out of the way so everything is neat. When I turned up to collect they ran the engine up for me, had a few recommendations for future upgrades (coolers, remote fan etc..) and provided compression and cam lift details etc...

I'm also aware I have a crapola EMPI exhaust but it'll do for now.

Their service is second to none and I'll be taking the bus back after I've put 500 miles on the engine so they can drop the oil, and give the engine a once over.

Unless it's hidden by the dizzy leads you'll be drilling a hole in the fanshroud and inserting a guide for yer accelerator cable.

congratulations,man....you are going to have a great weekend :D
so glad to see that you did not give up in spite of the nasty experience...now put 500 miles in that engine and ENJOY!

This post deserves a vzi style response but I won't sopping that low. I fitted my engine yesterday, wired it up and it's running.

The 500 mile run in will be the longest you've ever made, i kept it below 3500 revs, as advised. Mark said run it around the M25 a couple of times!! it gets better too once run in and checked over by matt and mark.

Enjoy..

Hey, sorry you took offence but it looked like that was one of the many things you'd be doing at the weekend..this being the Tech corner of the forum and so on.
A very nice looking motor you now have and pleased to read after massive disappointment earlier it has all come good. :D
I'm thinking of beefing up my old B type and have Autotechniks on my very short shortlist....just watching Alex4057 aka 'Jesus' blast his way countless times along the blacktop is a great showcase of their fine work.

No worries mark a typical vzo would have been full of effing and blinding but I'm just not like that. I didn't want other people toget the wrong end of the stick. If you decode on an autotechniks you can't go wrong although I have not racked up any miles yet the customer service is exemplary and the engine sounds 100 times better than that gobshite airspeed unit. :)

just tore down my engine i had built by richard martyn and the folks at airspeed.

So i already know the heads are ok, however wrongly spec'd for what i want. Dual spring 50cc heads, checked by stateside all ok no problems, Just reuqire single springs and more cc. ideal if i was building a 1776, so I put them up for sale. happy they are as good as new so i will sell these on with a clear consience.

So I start to strip the shortblock down.

Bad bits.

stripped thread on the oil cooler mount. stuck in with what appears well seal, cooler held on with 2 bolts
pistons all out of balance. swapped round gudon pins and got within 1g for all of them
all engine nuts incorrect torque eaisly undone with hand and hand about 3inch down short breaker bar.
dowels on crank shaft bearing very loose. bearing has moved good job it hasnt spun!
cam followers fubar all cracked.
scoring and marking at far end cam bearing. cam bearing no in right blocking part of oil way.
oil pickup extension for deep sump not fully welded, potential issue that pump could suck air.
spring missing from distributor drive

Will be fixing that lot, will get another bottom pully as its just cheap then get the lot dynamically balanced. Need to decide if i get another cam as well as followers.

Sounds too much like 5erge tbh seems common working practice for them. Not only was richard doing this, the guys that worked there were part of it to they had to know it was going on.

Oh well onward upward. Just thought you lot might be interested
