Picked up a 1600 TP at the weekend from that fine fellow mcvw. It has a plate fixed over the original engine number indicating a rebuild at some time. Just wondered if anyone recognises it and can shed any light on who may be responsible? Just curious thats all!

Appologies for the poor picture quality

Thanks guys, was just curious, figured Joe Bloggs wouldn't go to the bother of re-numbering the case. Despite not having run since 2000, shows all the signs of being a runner, but plan to use it as a base for a new 'built' engine to provide more power and hopefully long term reliability. Thinking perhaps 1776cc and a low pressure turbo, just like Saab use with great success. We will see, time, money etc...

Just be careful using the case as it seems Ive recently found out that Vege engines had special low compression (domed) pistons made an they used oversize pistons and bored out the Og vw barrels . Then they used smaller than stock piston rings again made specifcally for vege and they also in some cases heavily spot faced ( ie machined the surface where the barrel base meets the case) .
Ive recently got caught trying to get rings for a vege engine and it was only when i took the B an Ps to the supplier a v knowledgable vw guy this all came to light

Pete B,

Keep in touch about the motor. If it goes tits oop we'll sort something out.

Cheers,

Mike

If it was me, I would pull the heads & pistons off, check them over & replace or clean the parts & put it back together again.

If you are gonna build a 1776 turbo, most of the parts will be changed & you would have bought the engine for nothing.

A nice little 1641 will push the bus along nicely, it will be cheap to build until you get the big motor done.

Mike, very much appreciate your response, but you sold it in good faith, end of story. You have no liability. It may well be good as is, and if I do strip it for rebuild, then also could be fine! Don't worry mate, there is no problem!
Pete Nice, take your point, may well do as you suggest and do the 1641 thing, the bigger turbo motor is just an idea.
Nothing much will happen untill the new year anyway, time and money!
