Brake Pedal - Lateral Play

I noticed a fair bit of lateral play in my brake pedal. I jacked it up and there was a turn of the main brake pedal pivot bolt that I could turn, so that I did and it’s removed the play.

So, sorted, but I’m left wondering why after years of not touching it, why it’s happened?
I’ve never had to tighten one before.

Make sure its well lubricated , dry bearing will try to turn shaft.

Has the return spring eaten into the bushing?
