Hi guys, have just put a stock 34 pict carb back on my rebuilt 1600, it started and ran fine but wouldn't idle, it just died when i released the accelerator pedal.

Then I realised there were no wires to the idle cut off and the choke, so I connected both up to the positive terminal on the coil.

The bus would not start then, so I disconnected the wire to the choke and it runs again but won't hold idle.

Does anyone understand why this is happening?

Yes pal, along with the black with from the electronic ignition. Coming off the negative side is the red wire. It runs fine but obviously I don't have the choke, I have taken the stepped adjuster off and flipped it round so it doesn't interfere but obviously I am going to need the choke with this country's weather!

er,isn't the electronic ignition : red to + and black to - on the coil?

have you tried setting the auto choke correctly as that can affect idle.should be set to butterfly closed when told and fully open when warm. is the auto choke actually working? I think you need to determine that and then fit it/new one.

also I solved all my running issues simply by stripping and cleaning my carb.worth a try!;-)

Oh right! I will check my ignition module, not had the bus long and all my experience so far is in minis...this could be embarrassing!

I have a carb rebuild kit ready to do on the weekend, for £12.50 it's a no brainer. Cheers for your advice!

just thinking....have you got any instructions with the elect ignition? do you know what make it is? got a name on it anywhere? accuspark ? pertronix? etc...

just don't want you to fry it! its just that I find it hard to believe the red is- & black + ??? but then again,if it was wired wrong, surely it wouldn't work! hmmm:???:

Yeah exactly what I thought, its been running fine since I bought it in December. I'll check in the daylight tomorrow and put my findings on here.

...so a very late reply here, since this thread I have bought a new empi stock carb, 009 dizzy and pretty much replaced the ignition system completely. Had the bus set up on the rolling road and it ran mint, stock is definitely the way forward.

Still having an issue with the fuel pump push rod, it is being worn away over time to a point where it isn't long enough to activate the pump, so I carry 3 spares and change it every 3/4 months!

My bus is my daily driver, it is in need of serious work which I will do myself and document, so I was wondering what would be most useful to the forum -

should I start a thread on here dedicated solely to the restoration of my bus? (allows comments!)

OR

shall I add a page to my website and keep everything there? (easy to add photos / adjust layout)

What do you guys think?
