In process of taking gearbox out for an overhaul I made a rare discovery that I don't have a tool suitable for undoing the driveshaft bolts. They are a spline fit, but given the proximity to the rubber boot I'm reluctant to go on a buying spree as I'm going to guess that a spline socket on a 1/2" drive isn't going to fit........

So, what are folk using?

Cheers

Ps. Remember, he who dies with the most tools - wins!

I found this set worked for mine... I've also seen Allen Key bolts used...

I didn't have a problem getting them past the rubber boot, it's fairly malleable. :)

the bolts can be wound in and out with a 6mm allen key if you dont have the correct spline drive, however the correct star drive is best to get the correct torque.

I used a 3/8 socket for the job, it was advertised as being specifically for it from VWH or GSF or somewhere. Clean the bolts up, pop the socket in, and make sure they're properly seated by smacking them about with a hammer- helps to loosen off any corrosion holding the bolt in place etc. They should come off pretty easily then, if you're not in a huge rush I reckon it's worth doing properly, I didn't want to risk knackering the head (though if you do you might be able to wind 'em off with moleys, or cut the head off and they'll unwind really easily but you may have to take the rear stub axle carrier off first)
