Hi,
I recently had the fuel filter moved out of the engine bay area, as I had read a lot of articles about the risk of leaving it in place within the engine bay area.

Well now that I have done that I can't help but to notice a lot of photos, within mags etc., whereby a fire extinguisher is present in the bus, van etc.

Is this something I should buy and if so should it be a basic on from one of the various VW suppliers? I can't afford one of those systems that fit in the engine bay area.

I've just got a basic cheap (I think 15 quid one) extinguisher under the dash in case of emergency. Will probably move it slightly or add another little one by the stove when I get my interior sorted too. Not got anything fancy in the engine though. Definitely worth having something to put out fires, especially if you have a stove.

I'd be interested to know people's comments on extinguisher systems!

Looking at puttin one in when we get our van this weekend.

Sorry to high jack.

Yes

I have an auto system like above in the bay, a 1L biggish one in the rear of the bus and a little one in the cab, cant be too safe!

Hi,
many thanks for the info. I think at the very least I need to buy one to have in the cab and to put on my wish list one for the engine bay.

I have a multitude of fire extinguishers, powder, foam and halon handhelds, and am yet to fit my engine bay one.

I'd be very interested to hear anyone who has either tackled an engine bay fire with a 'normal' camping size extinguisher / has an engine bay extinguisher where it has actually worked in putting out a bay fire. I've only ever read stories of people who've tried, but found that the extinguishers quickly run out and the fire re-ignites, and it has taken the efforts of a more industrial sized extinguisher or the fire brigade to actually put it out.

For this reason, I'm under no illusion that any of mine would be capable enough to tackle an engine bay fire, but they are there to at least aide some form of escape if needed; or maybe if something electrical inside the van shorted etc.

Here you go this will tackle most all though a 9 kg might be needed for a fuel fire, but the 6kg will help till the brigade get there http://www.firesafetystore.co.uk/fire-extinguishers/dry-powder-fire-extinguishers/6kg-abc-dry-powder-fire-extinguisher.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjw0POdBRCq3arGgYD05pMBEiQAmiUeTjGrRH3GYwXzQVqRfqUXwHNSsV-cXd90s5kjPz14cGMaAhZz8P8HAQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Same as me, cannot believe people need to be told to carry them! I take the bigger one I keep in the back when I go normal camping. Let alone when driving a 45 year old death trap of a bus.
