Hi there everyone,

I've literally just joined up and am in need of some guidance. I have a 1970 bay window panel van with a 1641cc Remtec engine (about 4 years old now), engle 110 cam and a 32/36 weber carb in the back (so, a little it of punch but won't frighten your granny too much). I have owned the van for around 9 years now and do all the work myself. I have upgraded my tin-ware/ fan/ oil cooler etc from the single port style stuff to the larger and later style and am now looking at fitting an external oil filter. I did toy with the external oil cooler idea too but I have a dipstick VDO temp gauge and she runs fine as is.

I have trawled through forums and looked on the usual websites to find parts and info and I have reached the point of a headache and more confusion.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and tell me, this is what you want, I've done it to mine and it works blaady perfect.

I'm aware that there are clearance issues with the engine mount and, if need be, I can cut it and re shape it. I'm swayed towards not doing that but then it seems I will have to drill the case. If this is correct, what is the best option?

Any pictures, diagrams or information will be warmly welcomed. Thank you for reading! :D

I'm guessing the case isn't already tapped as I have had the engine apart before and cant see any blanking plugs etc. I have been told that you can link the oil return (from the filter) into the control valve bung under the engine (does that seem right?), I don't like the idea of having a oil pipe or union hanging under the sump though...too high a chance of getting knocked off on a low van!

When you say return adapters, do you mean returning the oil back to the pump housing or something else? I've heard that there are severe clearance issues between the remote oil covers/ pumps and the rear engine supports on early bays... is linking a feed and a return to the filter here possible without too much headache?

Cheers for the reply dude

No worries.
There are clearance issues with the engine support bar, but you can either space it off or clearance it.
The return adaptor replaces the rear oil pressure spring, but only fits 1971 on dual relief cases.
Funnily enough I've got one for sale that came in a box of parts....

What about those CB performance maxi-pumps? Allow full flow without machining or adaptors. May foul engine bar though :-/

Ok cool. I did think that it would be simple to add some spacers/washers between the engine case and the support bar to give more clearance but didn't know how far you could go before it starts stressing the engine mounts too much?
Do you know of any pictures of anyone who has done this mod before? I kinda want to get my head around it first before I go balls deep and accidentally take my daily driver off the road for a few days:p
When you say dual relief do you mean an engine case with a pressure control and pressure relief valve on the sump? or have I got the wrong end of the stick? I've got both so that could well be an option. Is it just the valve you have for sale or other parts of the remote filter system too? and does that mean I would need a pump cover with a relief valve built in to replace the one I had removed in the engine?

Apologies for all the questions:p

K@rlos, cheers for the reply.

I spoke to one of the guys at cool air and he said the maxi-pad (sorry, pump) is a really good option if it wasn't for the support bar being in the way. I was swayed towards that but didn't know how much hassle cutting and reshaping the bar would be, or if it would cause engine movement issues. I'll quite happily do it if its the 'done thing' but wanted to see if anyone else had gone about it a different way first. I love the idea of those scat ones that are all in one, the pump and filter housing combined and the filter just screws right onto it. Looks neater but I can't see any space for that with the bar in the way. I'm guessing the split-screens and the beetles got that option:p

The CB maxi-pumps are really for Beetles, the engine support bar does need a lot of modifying to fit one.
The oil return adaptors only fit a later dual-relief case, if you've got a pre-71 engine they won't fit.

The motor is a Remtec (about 4 years old) had a new case on her so might be the newer type. How do I tell if its dual relief?

sweet, haha yep she has a pressure relief and a pressure control valve:p So my options are... pump cover with an oil output and then plumb into the control valve for the return or heavily modify the support bar for the feed/return. Do you know if I will have to modify the support bar even if I just go for the single output on the pump cover? any ideas of which manufacturers are good for best clearance as there seem to be quite a few on the market! Have you got any tips if you've already tackled it yourself? cheers again

That's looking sweet! Talk about tight fitting hey. thanks for unloading the pics, it gives me an idea of different options.

If anyone else has any pictures of their remote oil filters fitted on their engines please show them off :D

I haven't posted anything in there yet no, the old girl has only just got back on her feet after a horrendous crash about 3 years ago. Not sure if you read about it or saw the pic in VolksWorld but I was involved in a messy crash on the a303 on the way to Plymouth Volksfest in 2010... after building up the motivation again (about a year and a half later) I removed the large amount of bent metal up front and got myself a front end body chop from FBI VW and got to work... the pic on my profile is her going around the nurburgring about a week or so ago to celebrate:p

jeez, that was ages ago! The last Vanfest the bus was on display at was in 2009... crash was on the 28th May 2010. How quickly time flies eh?! hope you are keeping well? I see you have had a few projects on the go over the last few years in the gallery, nice work.
I'll get those pics in the gallery asap, I have a nice selection from before the write off, during the repairs and its current improved state!
