Hi, I'm sure this has been asked many many times.
My 68 bus fuel gauge works at times. When the tank is full the gauge does go up but goes down after a short period of driving. It's not used that much fuel!!! Any ideas much appreciated. Many thanks...

Take out the engine or cut an inspection hole in the back shelf, and replace sender float, always handy to have an inspection hatch anyway
If you want dimension of hole to cut and where I can give them to you

i don't think you need to be as drastic as cutting a hole in the floor on a 68, there's no firewall betweeen the engine and tank, you can test the sender/gauge by removing the wire from the top of the unit and briefly touching to earth with ign on, if the gauge rises the sender is at fault, i'm guessing you'll have enough room to losen the tank and exchange the sender without too much hassle with no firewall.

Yes sorry you are right , I've done this to a 68 and a 71,
68 you can do without cutting a hatch

Hi Guys,
I changed the sender on my 68 last weekend, I can't possibly see how it could be done without taking engine and tank out? even if you had hands 2 foot long there isn't physically space in terms of head-height to lift the sender in or out?

That said it only took an hour or two and it's lovely to know how much juice is in there

i meant with minor strip of top of engine - carbs off/airfilter? you could loosen and tip the tank rather than drop the engine?

I hear what your saying but having just done it.. there is zero 'tipping' room in there!

Cut an inspection hole in the back shelf, easy

Thank you to you all, I think I'll remove the engine option. Yes, mine has no firewall.

Slight diversion of topic, but can/ should/ is-there-a-precedent-for - retro-fitting a firewall to early vans?
