Gearbox oil in steering box?

I have a lot of gearbox oil and was wondering if I can top up the steering box while under the bus changing the coupler.

It has to be better than none right?

All I’ve ever used in vws without a problem.

It’s when they’re filled with grease that’s the issue…..

not that it has none, just I've never checked since owning the Bus.
