Apparently you need a working horn for the MOT, so I reluctantly replaced my crappy rusted original (that worked but was a bit feeble) and re-made the wiring connections to it.
The rubber boots had perished and are now in the bin.

New one is the same type and inexpensive ;) but at least it works adequately.

But of course, it's still under the front wheelarch, ahead of the tyre.
Where it is exposed to a good degree of road crud.

Is this a design fault? Or is mine placed in an unusual position?
Was there ever a cover for it?

Thanks for reading...

Maybe it wasn't original then.
How many years / miles do they normally last?

My bus has been off the road for over 10 years as far as I can tell (2 years in my ownership), so maybe it didn't collect the whole 44 years-worth of mud...

I've extended the wheel arches with some brackets and some thick black plastic(actually from pre-made kitcar plastic wheel arches), to try and reduce the amount of crud that gets thrown under that edge.

My horn stopped working now as well...

I tested it by hooking up a battery to the two terminals, still nothing.
Took it apart and it is spanking clean in there!
Thought they were made super waterproof.

Where did you get your horn from?

Is there another way of testing the horn or is it a gonner?

Cheers.

Andy

My horn was bought for convenience: http://www.gsfcarparts.com/951VG0020
Sounds OK, about 400Hz.

I'm sure there are better and/or cheaper out there.

Connecting to a battery should make it sound. It's unlikely that polarity matters, but that is a possibility.

They generally are not user-serviceable, nor worth the effort trying, IMO.

For me, substitution is the simplest way to test anything: no equipment or technical knowledge required.
