How much more cooling....

whilst i'm no aerodynamicist, i do have more than a passing interest in aerodynamic theory, and although i'm more than happy to toe the *official* VW party line with regards to the later, 'squared off' vents affording more cooling/ inductive air to the fire breathing monster that was the 'new' 1700 engine, when you factor in the amount of turbulence thrashing around the sides of a bus, what with protruding door mirrors and various handles and window catches, i reckon the % improvement must be fairly minimal... it's no NACA duct at the end of the day is it ?

what there can be no doubting however is just how much better the later shape vent suits the overall shape of the bus 8)

utter poppycock old boy

just out of a kind of morbid fascination, for those who prefer the 'mcdonald's potato wedges' air vents... why ?

apart from the general vw 'scene' hysteria with having as old a model as possible (barndoor, split window beetle, '67 bay etc.) what aesthetic argument can you produce in its favour ?

or, to put it another way, had VW started out with the better vent shape to begin with, how many 'early' owners would have been hacking them out and fabricating their own crescent shaped inserts ?

the bus is a rectangle (what's one of its 'foreign' nick-names ? breadtin ?) it has rectangular panels, slab sides, rectangular sliding door, rectangular windows... where can a crescent shape possibly fit into that design :?

bus designer 1 "pass me my compound curves"

designer 2 "oh, i've left them in the car, and it's snowing outside..."

1 "oh, f*ck it, i'll just design the whole thing with me ruler"

2 "what about the air vents ?"

1 "what about them ?"

2 "we've got to have ONE curve on it"

1 "says who ?"

2 "ben pon"

1 "aah f*ck it... pass me that mug, i'll draw around that"

2 "no - it'll look out of proportion..."

1 "do you want to walk to the car... in the snow...?"

2 "oh, here's the mug but there'll be hell to pay"

1 "f*ck it... we'll do a proper design when we upgrade everything in 1973"

2 "how do you..."

etc.

I have never found the vents in any way entertaining or even worthy of mention... until reading this thread.

are you mental man ?

it's part of the whole early / late conundrum which makes owning these wonderful vehicles so much, er, fun ?

one of my favourites (after the bay vent paradox of course) is the whole type 3 issue...

owner 1 "i HATE late squarebacks... i could never own one, they're disgusting"

owner 2 "how come ? they look pretty similar to your earlier model ?"

1 "are you mental man ? they have a slightly different bit of side trim... and the indicators are fractionally larger"

2 "ah, ok you're right that is disgusting. what's your take on the famine situation in..."

1 "jeeeesus christ LOOK - a 1303"

-------------------------------------------------

in deference to the earlier bay design however the whole deformation panel issue on 'lates' makes them look retarded from the front :|
