I hope this is in the right place as there seems to be no new members/welcome section,

Anyway,

Im Mark from Cheshire, been into VW's for 10+ years now started out with watercooled motors and still own a Golf Rallye (VW homologation rally car built to compete with the Audi's and intergralle's of the late 80's) that i've had since 1999.

Anyway, now very much an aircooled convert and i'm currently restoring a 72 X-over Devon Moonraker been ongoing now for approx 2 1/2 years but with work I get very little time to spend on her. It might no be to everyones taste but it wont be going back standard there will be a few twist along the way.

Heres a teaser photo taken yesterday, please excuse the mess!

I've come to the realisation that my van isnt going to be ready for a long time so In the meantime i'm looking for another van as a stop gap, so if anyone knows/has one for sale let me know budget up to around 5.5k (but preferably less!) must be either roadworthy or very close to it (ie mot failure etc) and not a complete rusty basket case ive already got one of them!!

Welcome

Have a look at my user name !

Mine was a 90 graphite metallic bought it in 97 had it for about 9 years, still miss it !

Im only down the road from you, well not a the minute working in Newcastle

Hey Dale,

I just spotted your name reading another thread and wondered  A lot of the aircooled guys dont actually know what a Rallye is.

Mines an 89 SE model but sadly its a bare shell at the moment and has been sat in my dads garage for way too long now, so I too miss mine very much.

On for the memories 8) in its prime..

Could do with a g lader in the bus !

Where did you get it from

 a charger in a bus with todays fuel costs

The Rallye? long story but i'll shorten it to was looking at the time for a Mk3 16v and came across an advert of a lady looking to px the rallye for a 16V mk3.. so I ended up offering her silly money as she wanted shut of it. Best of all her husband worked at Grant Motorsport and it came with a history folder you could choke a donkey with and it had alsorts done to it. I also fitted a Mk3 dashboard (1st in this country I dont mind saying ;) ) set of coilovers and a good clean as the dirty mare used to smoke in it and just flick the buds all over the floor.

I blew the charger to bits about 2004-5 although I did have a spare one which I had rebuilt but after fitting it and getting it running again I decided to strip the car and give it a full resto but then bought a house and the rest is history. Its sat in me dads garage and theres a fortune in me dads shed including a 20v engine, porsche brakes etc etc

Its next on the list once the campers done :D

Hi there and welcome along to the forum. Like the photo and love the rollers :D How much head height (and clearance) did you need to roll your bus over and width as well ?? Mine could do with a little peep underneath also. Sills might want a bit of encouragement I`m thinking and at the least I`d like to coat the underside. Didn`t think I`d be able to use a set of rollers,, then I saw your piccy  there may be some hope

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, And welcome again

Hello and welcome!

I did wonder about the rallye name - I consider myself educated! :D - and also slightly miffed as I never knew and just assumed they had a jetta front end put on  sorry 'bout dat!

never had the luck to own a rallye but i know what one is ..it sits somewhere between hens teeth..and ..rocking horse s*%t but twice as expensive ..about as much chance of seeing one on the road as a cortina savage....welcome to the clan by the way. theres a chap in chester who has an earlybay in his front garden he lives about 50 mtrs from the harley davidson garage its been there for donkeys coverd in a tarp i know its not a runner but if you hear of him flogging it it would be good for parts...just thought i would let you know ....

 your forgiven, the Rallye front is about 30 times more expensive than a standard jetta one though!

The arches are standard too! cant tell you the amount of people down the years that have said what a great kit it is, standard and permanent 4WD with an 1.8 Supercharged engine, good for about 200bhp with a few tweeks. only 5000 built and all lhd.

Lesson over :D

Sadly Rallyes arnt as rare as you would think and its only recently that the prices have started to rise in comparison to the Quattros and integralles. Although I did see on recently up for £17,000 which is good (for me anyway)

In 10 years appart from shows I have probably seen 4 Rallyes on the open road, I used to see on nearly everyday though on the M60 around manchester at rush hour doing the daily commute.

Cheers dude, I might have to pop down to harley davidson and have a ganders. I do know where theres a late bay in Liverpool on a drive thats been there at least 6 years which I might also go knocking on as my mates also looking for a bay project.

That still there? bloody hell, i wondered about that when i drove past it every day on my way back from work (underneath whatever hotel or supermarket express they have built just across the canal from the station). I kept meaning to stop off and see if he was selling, but wanted something a bit less work... that worked out didnt it.

I've never actually worked out what sort of area you need to roll the van, headroom isnt that mych probably 6`6" - 7` and I would estimate the width to be the height of the van plus the width of the van if that makes sense. Hopefully it will be getting rolled back onto its feet in a few weeks time so i'll pay a bit more attention

If space is an issue though C J autos do a wheel kit for theres, letting you roll the van outside and then wheel it into a garage. I'm sure thats easier said than done with a van and not a car  Doesnt come cheap though at a tad under £700 but i'm sure you will always find a buyer once you were finished with it.

Hey thanks for that, :D Like the wheel kit as well, a couple of castors and a couple of jockey wheels to jack it as well, brilliant idea  shame I never thought of it

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, Out to the back lane with a tape now !  ;) ;)

Welcome 89. This is a great forum. All the fun and no attitude. You may like it here. Oh... and a clean desk is the sign of a sick mind. That goes for workshops too. :)

Cheers guys,

Well after only a couple of weeks on here I've already nearly bought two vans but just missed out on them, you lot are a bad influence and my bank manager will not be a happy man

Welcome and would love to see the Rallye in the flesh when you get around to it ;)

And one of the last known sightings  Theres even more junk stored on and around it now as me dad is completely pissed off with it being there now he doesnt care anymore.

rallyestrip.jpg

His garage door broke about 6 months ago and he has only just gotten around to ordering one, so its not been seen for a while.

It will get done one day but for the time being I think its going to end up stored away in a council garage that i'm planning on renting so that could be the end of it really.

Sad thing is its worth more money in bits but it would kill me to break it, I must have a small forune sat in my dads shed!

Cheers for that bit of Golf porn :D

Love the MK1 GTI - looks nice and tidy (next year looking at maybe getting one as a daily, but keep on changing my mind every other week  )

Nice Rallye fella

Grant Motorsport is a name from the past! Used to hang out with Grant at GTi shows back in the 90s, infact i wired his unit up in Brislington many years ago, he was running a Vento VR6 in a race series at the time. Happy days

Anytime 8)

The Mk1 turned out to be a bit of a pig really, it was bought for my sister at Tatton park from a reputable VW company in the Cheshire area.. I'm saying no more :x

Engine was a mix of god knows what and it never did run right, we ended up doing a straight swap for a LHD G60 Corrado  , which was the best deal ever lightning quick and so much fun we broke it in once the tax ran out and made a fortune from it (nearly tripple what we paid for the mk1)

I've had a Caddy and about 3 mk1 's including my first car but would love another, there so much fun and like everything else there only going to go one way in price so its always going to be a good investment.

This was the best though, one owner from new and just 28K on the clock when I got it. Regret selling it to this day I believe it now sports a 20valve turbo engine.

Sorry its more photos, I really dont need an excuse
