Anyone have or looked into installing a safe in their van? I am going round Europe this summer and am getting round to thinking about security, especially as the g/f has just got a new camera for Christmas. Obviously don't want something too heavy that will laden the van, but want something big enough to hold an SLR camera, phone, satnav & passports etc. The ones I have seen upto now won't take the camera!

Any other security tips for driving round Europe?

I used to have a safe that I made myself 8) It was made out of the spare wheel well in the back. I plated it over and fitted a good lock and hatch. It was bullet proof and secure, hidden out of sight aswell  I had the spare wheel on the roof so it was all okay for long trips etc

I like it, my spare wheel is on the front so have an empty well atm!! :D

Did yours hinge along the nearside with the lock & hatch inboard? Was it as simple as one sheet of metal over the well, or would that be too vunerable to a crow bar attack?

It would be no more vunerable than the rest of the van!

Making one using a section of gun cabinet.

Steve

I used metal pretty much the same as this, tough as hell and takes ages to angle grind when you loose the keys....................apparently

Maplins sell in car GPS safes.

Yeah seen a few GPS/phone safes, but this bl**dy slr camera means it needs to be bigger - I told her to get a compact for travelling!!

Where would I get said 'gun cabinet' material from?

I just went to a local sheet metal company and asked for the toughest stuff they had
