Looking forward to Graham's update when he's fitted the late bay box to his own bus :D
Is it wrong to get excited by such things
And to think I nearly sold my bus a few months ago
I'd be stuck watchin I'm a bleeding celebrity if I couldn't come on here
Yer a bunch of lifesavers you lot

Had mine JK box fitted today, it is a vast improvement on my old box & I no longer look like I'm pissed when driving :)

Why didn't I buy my bus years ago !?

Ok so its taken longer than expected due to being busy with customer buses but got a window late last week and finally fitted the late bay box to Billy our 70 Sunroof deluxe. We are now offering this as a service see thread here http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=57377" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Graham,I've just replied to your e mail regarding a price for fitting a RHD box.
Cheers
Mike

Took Dita's off yesterday. After removing all congealed grease/oil/sand coating to be able to locate bolts removed the cover to discover a relatively unworn worm gear and peg. But packed with grease none of which was in contact with the operation parts but forced out to the sides of the casing.. Tempted to clear out as much as possible and fill with oil. Only thing I'm unsure off is whether to replace seals, bearing etc whilst this far down the line...
Anyone know if they're available and where from? And oil grade?

Not sure about the parts, I'm sure someone will sell them even if it's not from a Vw store.
Oil you need is EP90 I believe.

I filled mine up (whilst fitted)with one of these

I would estimate the box was about one third full when I did it. It still has a slow leak but filling it once or twice a year should be ok for now although it's not ideal.

On my '68 steering box, when I opened it, it was filled with a kind of grease. I had a split bus steering box laying around in the garage, so i opened it too. What I've seen is the part that was damaged in my '68 box (steering peg) was the same in the split box (My '59 box is a 2 pieces peg and my '66 is a 1 piece peg). I reassemble the '68 box with the steering peg from the split box, without following the torque values from the Bentley. The box is near perfect now. So, as I was able to see an improvement, I'll do the tooling needed to torque it properly and i will fill it with oïl.

Yep.. full off yellow grease with voids around the very areas where lubricant is needed.. going to order seals and bearings from Schofields as it seems unworn and after loosening off the over zealous adjustment has hardly any play.

Its really hard to check for play without it being fitted to the bus, most boxes feel ok until they have the load applied to them with the wheels touching the ground. I filled my late bay box with Millers Steering lube which is designed for steering boxes.

Cheers Graham, agreed just decided to check it.. The play was I'm sure a rather chewed up coupling. Have bought the millers as you are not alone in recommending it.

I've just stumbled across this thread after searching the forum for details on replacement steering boxes for my LHD 71 bay.

I contacted Power steering services, and my email thread is below. They say they remanufacture any required parts & replace. Has anybody had any dealings with them. At £240 plus VAT, it's the cheapest I've found.
