My crossover bus has a gaping wound in its petrol tank breather pipe so it's time to take the engine out to fix it. Any suggestions for other sensible preventative jobs while it's out?

Cheers
Dan

waxoyl inside the rear wheel arches.
check/replace engine to tinware seals
replace fuel line
check/replace crankshaft oil seal
check clutch condition

off the top of my head :) no doubt someone else will be along with some other suggestions!

1- Possibly replace starter motor bush in bell housing as much easier to do with engine out
2- I put dynomat sound proofing behind panel in front of petrol tank which helped

Hope this helps

Change all breather pipes.
Change all fuel lines
set / reset valve clearances (so much easier with the engine on the floor)
Set / reset points (again easier when you can see what your doing)
Change the oil in the air filter / oil bath filter

Thanks all. In retrospect dropping the engine down far enough was so easy I don't want to hold up getting her back on the road too much. It turned out one of the breather pipes had worked loose from the hose joining it to the top of the tank.

I will be:
- cavity waxing around the petrol tank
- replacing ALL the breather hoses (question: why the two long straight 7mm pipes above the tank with a short hose at both ends? I intend to replace each of the two pipes with a long piece of hose to reduce the number of joins and therefore potential leak points)
- putting decent jubilee clips on every breather hose connection
- actually connecting the two breather pipes that are currently open at the rear of the engine bay to a T-piece and thence to the air cleaner
- sound deadening behind the firewall
- adding soundproofing above the holey-sheet in the engine bay
- replacing 4 very rusty bolts holding up rear support bar

I've ordered all the hoses, T-piece, reducer, elbow, clips etc. from advancedfluidsolutions.co.uk - very comprehensive and much more reasonable than VW suppliers.

Wish me luck :)

if it were me i would have a cuppa tea and collect all the loose nuts and bolts and wonder where they all came from. Then id forget why the engine was out in the first place, go down the pub, get in trouble with mrs bex horse , have to take her shopping the next day as payment and finally refit said motor, attempt to start it , swear and get abusive to neighbours due to fact it wont start, go to pub and .......finally remember why the motor was removed and take it out again. thengo find a stella, and the cycle continues....

but i would deffo look at any fuel lines and dodgy electrical bits and bobs thats lerking about. :D

the horse family :p

Hmmm ... list of jobs to do seems to be increasing rather than decreasing.
- remove surface rust, convert, prime & paint all round petrol tank and engine bay
- replace fuel filler hose & clips
- replace gear box oil seal

Target is to get her back on the road by the end of next week. Hmm...
