My Bus is from the states. It was Taxed,MOT'd n registerd when i baught it a few months ago.
Its been registerd(And MOT'd) since May in the uk.
Still got US headlamps fitted without the UK beam deflectors fitted.
And the rear light lenses are the all Red type.
Surely that cant be right?
Are there any other buts that need converting for the uk road regs?

Cheers

Rich

Sounds like a leniant MOT tester ;)

Masked headlamps are ok, but the red lenses are strictly illegal, as are the shared filament for the stop/indicator bulb. Most folk wanting an OG look wire the indicators to the reversing lights and fit an orange bulb, it looks nice and is very safe.

Would suspect the headlamps had tape over the offending part of the lens when the test was carried out (all legal and above board) and has since been removed. Do the tail lights operate in the US manner, single bulb which covers brake light and indicator? Or (as is usual) have the reversing lights been converted to indicators and use orange bulbs? This way the all red lens is fine.

Think we posted at the same moment Clem!

Yes the rears are as they were intended in the States.
Is it easy enough to convert your indis to your reverce light lenses(inc bulbs)?
I.e take live indi feed straight to reverse light bulb holder.
Or is it a rewire, relays etc etc?
Cheers again :D

Am sure it is very simple, identify the indicator wire and connect to the reversing lamp? AFTER removing the reverse lamp wiring and making safe of course! Have to confess, mine was done and I haven't looked or taken notice of what was actually altered  Surely it's only a cable to a bulb holder, just re-directed to a different lamp unit. May be wrong, but cant be much to it.

have a look here rich this my help

To clarify, red lenses are legal but the indicators must flash amber.
Hence my amber LED bulbs behind the us spec lenses passing an MOT.

If you ever wonder what the rules are the testers handbook is online here...

Yeah mine has the indicators wired in to the reversing lights; it works well and keeps the factory look, although it would be nice to have reversing lights. I have read that you can use green bulbs that when flashed through red lenses show amber, although I have never tried it myself.

You would also need to run a wire from the MC to ensure the brake lights work.

And at the front the indicators are wired up as side lights, not sure if it is legal to have orange sidelights?? but I would think not. I changed my front lamps to RHD ones with a sidelight built in. It is easy to split the wire and feed up to the headlights.
