Your only real option will be to leave the M5 at Taunton or Bridgewater and head for Glastonbury, Wells, then Frome, Trowbridge, and hit the M4 again at Chippenham unless you leave Cornwall and head east from the start and gradually come up. The big thing is staying away from Bristol and from Bath.
