As my knowledge of air cooled engines grows and my confidence in tackling repairs gets better I notice my oil filler neck is loose always thought it normal. As I say my knowledge is expanding and I know know this is wrong. I see there is a tool to remove and tighten this but is there a diy way of doing it whilst the engine is still in?

Also I notice after a journey oil sat in the area underneath the filler neck. Could the fact that it is loose be a factor in the oil being where it's is? Cheers

i would blame the neck being loose causing this

i used a pointy pair of pliers in the open position to sit in the groves then twisted

not as good as the tool but needs must

Cheers. I was thinking that but reading into it people were talking about making special tools etc. To be honest I'm a bit of a tool freak at the moment so doesn't take much to get my buying a gadget.

Mine was a little loose too so replaced the securing bolt and washer

Tried to remove it today. Using pliers. Really not working. Seems to be stuck. May need to get the tool although looking at fashioning something similar to a metal ruler but slightly thicker.

Update. Used a grinder to get a piece of metal down to the right size but couldn't get purchase on it. Long and short. Bought the tool

Aye, I couldn't do mine either. I'm not sure if I replaced the whole stand in the end, or just ignored it.
