The VW official servicing manual states that the engine needs to be removed to do this. I have looked around the various forums and you tube and can't find evidence to suggest that this can be done with the engine still in place on the vehicle. Has anybody done this? If so how did you torque the flywheel back in as I have found it impossible to get a torque wrench into the rear of the engine bay with the socket attached, it just won't fit.
