One question; Why?

One question; Why?
i like to think of it as *degrees of happiness* :p

when i was an adolescent, i trod the path of maths geekdom, and took the unusual step of using my free periods in sixth form to study advanced maths, whilst all the 'normal' kids went ten-pin bowling, had 'fingers and tops' (lovely expression) behind the palace amusements, woodpecker, superkings, jumpers for goalposts etc. etc.

one thing that fascinated me, in with all the nonsensical quantum mechanics being bandied about by our maths teacher, was the simple idea of degrees of infinity, i.e. if you were to count all the odd numbers you'd have an infinite amount, and the same with the even numbers, but what about all the numbers... surely that's just infinity as well, but there are twice as many numbers as there are even numbers aren't there... also if you start painting a cricket ball, and you have enough paint, and indeed can be arsed, does the shape of the universe dictate that you'd eventually end up inside the ball ?

what ? what are you on about ?

i gave up at this point and went bowling with the rest of the kids but that geekiness has never left me, as you can probably tell

but what about degrees of happiness ?

i had an interesting chat with an old school friend of mine just after the european cup final in 2005, and we'd had a strangely similar 'road to damascus' experience during the penalty shoot out. in december 2001, just as i was preparing to be a father in fact, liverpool played derby county at pride park, and after taking an early lead through michael owen, we failed to 'kill them off' and conceded a ridiculous late penalty, which jerzy dudek subsequently saved, and those of us in the ground went appropriately mental. fast forward three and a half years, and although this time my mate was in istanbul and i was next door with harold, when dudek saved shevchenko's penalty to win liverpool the biggest prize in club football, we went appropriately mental again, but it was no more of a release than that day at pride park, when the stakes were so much lower, which when you think of it is a bit odd. or is it ?

the human condition.

now i'm a big slot mag fan... wouldn't settle for rolling anything else... i'm not really arsed about colour or where the indicators are but the stance has got to be right, as have the wheels, and although i've got a set of wolfies i've never really liked them, more the idea of them, so when i saw those appliance slots come up for sale i nearly had a seizure going through the old "i'd like to buy them how would you like me to pay" shenanigans via PM, knowing that at that very moment there might be dozens of seventies wheel aficionados out there with the same idea... hideous... and then the wait for the phone call from the courier saying they'd lost one, knowing that they don't exactly grow on trees... anyway all went to plan and they're mine... all mine... and i really do derive a great deal of pleasure just from the knowledge that i own them, and then a short while later it was my birthday and a 'friend' bought me the 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' owls, and even though they're just a bit of seaside tat, i got almost as much pleasure out of displaying them as i did from the wheels, despite their relative commonness. (i also once saw a carved wooden elephant in a tat shop in brixham which may or may not have been crying real diamond tears ; unfortunately i was out-voted by my colleagues when i suggested we bought it as a wedding gift for the couple whose wedding we were visiting brixham for, although that's another story.)

at the time then that i needed to show off my wheels on vzi and they'd just set up their 'photography' forum and people were posting "ooh a ladybird at dawn, as one with the dew" and all that sort of stuff i thought the owls and the wheel had a certain synergy... i enjoyed the juxtaposition of the warm, organic wood, and the living, breathing creatures it represented, against the cool sterility of the alloy ; a material which could never live, could never harbour a consciousness, but at the same time could still inspire such feelings of warmth... of joy... within me.

i also took quite a lot of acid in the eighties

Thanks for clearing that up for us, and giving me something entertaining to ponder on my tea break.

My money is on (B). :p

funny... when i think of Councillor, i always think of a 'bag of spiders' as well

i was dead set on a set of enkie slot mags, always loved them, and saw a standard late chocolate coloured bay with them on and even though it was late it looked sweet with the enkies. i have a set of cookie cutter now waiting for the bus to be finished

as much as i love the look of a standard bus, i just love the look of that bus, the front end is just so smooth!
