When I bought my 1969 Deluxe 3 years ago the rear seat was just sitting in the back and not bolted down. I have completed the restoration and now the seat back just does not make sense. I searched the forum but could not find what I needed. My repair manual does not show anything.
I get how the seat bolts to the floor, but what keeps the seat back steady. I have a clip about 3" wide in the middle bottom of the seat back, but I do not have anything for it to slide into. What gives? How does the seat back stay secure when people lean back into it?

Hiya vw,

Actually there are a couple of things.............................

At the bottom center of the seatback there should be a metal "tongue" or tab extending downward. From your description it sounds as if you have already noticed this. In any event, this tab fits into a metal bracket welded to the slanted portion of the floor behind the seat. This serves to keep the bottom of seat in one place.

Once you have the seatback positioned into that metal bracket it sits as it supposed to but will not bear any weight put against it as a passenger in the third seat would do. To keep the seatback in a proper supporting position there are two simple "L" brackets which attach to the seat back (on either side) and also into the wall on each side.

This totally seems right and the answer I was looking for. The side bracket hardware I never had. I cut a hole in the carpet but I can't find that welded bracket. I am afraid to cut the new carpet even more. Can I beg anyone for a picture? Thank you for your reply.

Check the link should be to page 19 0f 20 mid way down theres an instruction manual, just above the letter G, its small but it gives you the idea on location, if you have a converted panel it wont have this fitted

there is a clearer image on another thread somewhere possibly one of the rear seatbelt fixing stickies in the tech section

Thank you, that is exactly what I am looking for. I am just going to have to cut the carpet a little more to find it. I think I remember that being there.
