Can anyone advise please ? - I've just rebuild my Solex 30 pict 2 carb - using a kit. Now its running again but;
1. The Choke unit get very hot - much warmer than the rest of the carb. Is this normal ? ( don't know if it did this BEFORE the rebuild)

2. Adjusting the CO screw in or out seems to make no discernable change to the speed of the engine (except just before it closes completely and stalls the engine) so I'm unsure if I'm actually 'Tuning' it at all. I'm trying to get the motor to run a little leaner.

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi

Yes choke unit does get hot.

As for tuning the only thing you can set on the 30 pict 2 is the tickover mixture the main jets are set and can not be tuned.

Try this link for more tuning info http://www.vw-resource.com/30PICT2.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Many thanks Ian.
Checked it all through today-changed the replacement needle jet back to the original Solex one and now the truck runs much better.

Is averge 24 mpg ok for a stock single port 1600 d'you think ? Its quite rich running + make the plugs and tail pipe very sooty.
Cheers

I get about 26 to 28 mpg out of a 30 pict 3.

Does it smell rich at tickover, or does the exhaust gas feel wet i.e hold you hand near the exhaust pipe once van has warmed up and rub you fingers together if it feel slightly wet your tick over mixture is to rich.

You should be able to adjust this with the mixture screw, I think a base setting is turn the mixture screw in till it bottoms out (don't force it home, you only want it to lightly seat) then back out 2.5 turns, this is a base setting for the tick over mix.

Check out this on youtube http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XOxxS1EMphU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; its in 2 parts.

Sorry for late reply. I've been away and not had chance to tinker further, but I'm looking forward to it !
Your mpg returns are impressive -
i'll try what you suggested and go on a long run to see if it's improved.
Next week the electronic ignition goes in.
Many thanks
