I have a set of steel wheels (Mangels, similar to 356 rims) with lousy chrome plating. My question is, what is the best method for removing said plating? Bear in mind I am wanting to powder coat the wheels, would shot blasting work or should I go to a chrome plating company for them to strip the existing coating as if for re-plating?
I could simply phone local firms, but would prefer un-biased (not money grabbing) opinions.
Any advice much appreciated, thanks.

Try blasting.

I had my cheap chrome hub caps sand blasted and it left a nice etch surface for the powder coating and they came up a treat.
I'd source out a local sand blaster and take the wheels down and get them to try one while your there.

If you get stuck give Mick a call here for help:-

I have had tons of stuff shot blasted & powder coated in the past.

I have never had any real problems unless there is deep rust.

Ah. May well try blasting then if so many folk have had good results. My thought was that blasting may not remove the chrome very well, but looks like that isn't the case.
Thanks again!

Even if it doesn't remove all of the chrome, it will give it a very good key for the powder coat.

I have had chrome tinware done a few times, even with a fine shot blaster was fine.
