Hello everyone I'm new to earlybay.com and have just bought my first camper a 71 westfalia cal import( i'll put some pics up shortly). I had planned to go to run to the sun as my first vw show but have read some bad reviews.

I've also since found out that there is a show called Volksfest on the same weekend . Just after some advice as in your opinions which one is better :?:
Cheers Mayo

Run to the sun is no longer considered a VW event (not that it ever was) were as Volksfest will only be VW's.
Depends what your looking for out of the weekend, A bunch of drunken Chav scum then RTTS, a drunken VW crowd then Volksfest.

Well looking at the home page for the Plymouth festival, 50 real ales and 25 ciders at £2..... that got my attention straight away

Plymouths a new festival, I was talking to one of the organisers whilst at Stanford last year and lots of promises but not spoken to anyone that attended, RTTS well everyones got there horror storries and there good.....Horses for courses... more than a few of the shows and fests last year were inundated with morons and nob jokeys that made life a bit of a pain for quite a few traders and campers so its gonna be a hard call, personally I'd be heading for Plymouth If I were going to any that weekend....

RTTS is and always has been a DJ/Dance orientated weekend. The only real draw for petrol heads is the Sunday show and shine which is at the other end of Newquay. Back in the day it was a Custom Car show which slowly turned into a Custom Car and VW show which is slowly turning into a Custom Car/VW/Boy Racer event. Things move on i suppose.

Plymfest was a good show by all accounts in its first year last year and promises to be even better this year. Since ive stopped doing RTTS i always drive in the opposite direction to either Dorset or the New Forest.

If i had to do one it would be Plymouth.

Whats this plymouth one? Not seen this one? What else is there in the south west, Someset, Devon, Cornwall?

Bristol volksfest (bristol)
Vanwest (somerset)
CVWOC Jamboree(cornwall)

All 3 of these shows are great.

it`s not called "run from the scum" locally for nothing. The plymouth event was by all accounts a great success last year so if it were me that`s where i`d be heading

Really enjoyed Plymouth VolksFest last year, quite chilled out if a little cramped as i dont think they expected such a big turn out, did big Bang,Vanwest,Bristol Volksfest, ctt prom, Holton classic, Vw Action and Vanfest.
I wont do rtts as its too mad for me

Like said Above...2 totaly different shows..

Run to the sun.......i used to like it but not anymore!..Radio1 Dj's swooped down on Newquay in IMO..Destroyed the place.

Volksfest...Great relaxed show good day out for all ages...

Last year we stayed at Plymouth Volksfest and went to Newquay for RTTS on the Sunday which was a good weekend - relaxed 'VW' camping at a reasonable price but didnt miss out on the RTTS thing.

We've done RTTS in our own way. Joined in the big cruise from Reading on the Friday (even led one year 8) ) stayed at Hendra and then gone to the show and shine on Sunday.
Completely stayed away from the main campsite, and just enjoyed a weekend in Newquay with VW's everywhere you look. Even then you have to expect chavs all over the place as well and the traffic in the town centre is crazy.
There is often a surf championship held at Fistral on the same weekend which adds to the busyness.

Having said all that...we didn't bother last year and probably won't this year either :?

what are you into ?

are you still at the stage where a wet field full of volkswagens excites you ?

go to plymouth.

wanna see a renault 5 with a birdcage on its roofrack ?

RTTS is your answer.

i'm about equidistant from both... i can't quite see the point in sharing a field full of VWs just because *you can* and i like 'cars' in general, and there's ALWAYS something worth seeing at the RTTS show and shine, so i just head there on the saturday, or the sunday, or whenever it is... there are much better 'shows' than both to be honest :|

(quite the ray of sunshine aren't i)

plymuf volksfest last year most certainly wasnt a wet field of vws.....

in comparison to rtts...which in my opinion is ***** now... it was a cool little show set in a real nice valley....
admittedly a little tight for space but mostly due to the more people turning up than the organisers had bargained for...
club camping was crowded but cool, especially if you paid a little extra for a private porta loo....

we knocked up an open air cinema on the sunday night and watched smokey and the bandit and transformers!!!!

think dreadzone are playing this year....
i cant really fault the show apart from the traders were a bit few and far between.... show and shine was cool though and nice to see some new rides other than the ones that always appear on the show pages of volksworld and ultra!!! praps an EB line could be a possibility?!?!

you need to be quick i reckon though as this show will sell out quickly as its a great alternative to rtts...plus the ticket price goes up in march....

Im gonna be at Plymfest. 8)

RTTS = Massive no from me.....

Plymouth was pretty wet come Monday morning ;)

I dont know, the camping was useful last year as getting onto a site around Newquay outside of a family group and not on Trevalgue is nigh on impossible.
I do loads of 'in a field' shows through the year, and being so close to the coast there, and being so close to RTTS* doesnt lie easily with me ....

Ill probably make this years RTTS/Cornwall/Plymouth weekend a family one again this year so will approach it differently, but definately felt there was something odd about being camped in isolation, inland, and cut off from the world last year at Plymouth (this in no way detracts from the organisational efforts made by Plymfest).

*RTTS was my first big 'event' in a Beetle (20 years ago, this year) so maybe Im skewed by emotion and the hope of what it 'could' be?

What really is needed is a 'Plymfest' campsite just for VWs, just on the edge of Newquay .... dont ya think?? :?

nah your both right.... it clearly is a field full of vws.... but thats cool with me!!!
and i do remember some hideous weather on the A38 going back on the Monday!!!

still prefer it to rtts! although i could maybe be tempted to cruise up to newquay for the show n shine on sunday.... we'll see...

ignore me i'm just being a dick

the problem for me is that i like cars... most cars, even renault 5s and MKII golfs with plywood parcel shelves, so the RTTS show and shine will always be a *must see* for me, apart from the years when i can't be arsed to go, which is most years to be honest

the flip side of this is that i hate *people* so your idea of chilling in a wet field full of tents and awnings pitched 4cm apart from each other is my idea of hell, as is the thought of trevelgue

bottom line ?

there's always SOMETHING at RTTS worth making the effort for :p

oh god..... does that mean im a dick too?!?!? ive had a renault 5 turbo and am currently selling a mk 2 goof gti!!!!!!  :D

hello, i'm the councillor and i'm chilling with my chums.

it's a punctuation paradox the likes of which we haven't seen since brian burrows asked how he should spell

whores

on one of his show posters over on vzi...

pimps n hos ?

pimps n' ho's ?

pimps 'n' 'ho's ?
