Sliding door will not open

My 71 US import arrived yesterday, but I cannot get the sliding door to open. Have unscrewed mechanism castings, there is no panel on so can see cable and bar running from front to back, have pulled, pushed and proded but I still cannot get the thing to open. Can anybody offer any help? As you can probably tell I am very new to the bus scene, I may be missing something extremely simple.

As you push the handle down, push hard on the inside rear of the door halfway up - it should swing out. Then spray lots of plusgas on the linkages and hinges, followed by some white grease. Eventually it should free up.

BJ1 thank you very much. I had been trying to get the door open all afternoon on my own. With one person on the outside and one pushing on the in, your recommendation worked instantly. Thanks again.
