A couple of things could be happening as in there’s a bush on some to slide the starter into, these could be problematic if not quite right. But eating starters sounds like it may not be turning the starter off once you’ve started the motor, or possibly just staying engaged. If you can get under while the motor is running, listen to the starter , is it still running?
