Hi ya Wodan
Most Vw companys sell the ignition bit with the wires on separatly for 26 quid , that way you can keep your original key.... It fastens into your key housing and is secured by a small grub screw
It can be installed with the housing still on the coloumn But I find it easer to slacken all the bolts and ease the top of the coloumn away frm the dash , As its to wiggle the wires through
